Trump issues first veto in targeting congressional rejection of his emergency declaration
Source: Washington Post
President Trump issued the first veto of his presidency Friday to secure federal money for a border wall he promised as a candidate and considers a crucial priority for reelection, capping a week of confrontation with both political parties.
Today I am vetoing this resolution. Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution and I have the duty to veto it, Trump said in the Oval Office.
Twelve Republicans had joined Democrats to challenge Trump over his declaration of a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border, which would allow the president to circumvent Congress and spend billions on wall construction. The rare rebuke from members of his own party was symbolically important, but Congress does not have the votes to overturn Trumps veto.
Id like to thank all of the Great Republican Senators who bravely voted for Strong Border Security and the WALL, Trump tweeted ahead of his veto action. This will help stop Crime, Human Trafficking, and Drugs entering our Country. Watch, when you get back to your State, they will LOVE you more than ever before!

(177 posts)I read the online version of the report in the Wash. Post and I didn't pick up on the effort to make Trump's action seem noble. What do you base that on?

(4,115 posts)Its right there in the first sentence:

Leaving out the part about how he promised that some other country would pay for his stupid promise is a rather glaring omission, donchaknow? To suggest that hes doing it to make good on a promise he made to the American people is mendacious and leaves out some critical detail, donchathink?

(4,115 posts)who have done everything in their powers to normalize this monster. The urine that has been trickling down on our heads is not rainwater, and they have been SO reluctant to inform us that it is, indeed, urine. Asparagus style urine, even.
Words mean things - they are the oxygen of the body politic and just so long as they continue to frame events in the language of normalcy we shall remain sopping wet.
Let any moderately literate adult with their finger on the pulse of events in this country -anyone who isnt concerned with their next quarterly earnings report - rewrite this article and a different picture will emerge of exactly what this cornered rat is attempting to accomplish. You do realize he just threatened to use our military and police against his political opponents, dont you?
I am out of patience with these media outlets who STILL, after all thats transpired in the last several decades, try to soft pedal the situation in which we find ourselves.

Media is a friggin' joke, even the WaPo and NYT are half-way down the toilet at best.

I saw no mention of it in the last few issues of The Washington Post. How is this not huge fucking news?!!

(10,775 posts)... getting his tiny hands on the money to pay for his Magic Wall is another. The National Emergencies Act doesn't enable him to misappropriate money budgeted for other purposes.

(26,236 posts)which is currently packed with Trump leaning supporters though that might not long after the next Democratic president with a Democratic Senate majority declares a National Supreme Court Emergency and increases the number of SCOTUS from 9 to 15.
Followed of course by the Senate ramming through 6 liberal justices with a majority vote of 51 thanks to the Repugnants giving there consent to do that.

(50,528 posts)Young person, you are not thinking clearly enough. The next Democratic president needs to expand the Supreme Court to 19 seats. This will enable us to seat two panels - one in DC where it's always been, the other in San Francisco. The Chief Justice and his or her staff will supervise the certiorari board.
By expanding the Court so much, we can place two of the five current conservative justices on the Western Division court, and backfill both benches with good solid legal thinkers...who make Stephen Reinhardt look like Antonin Scalia.

(6,635 posts)So far, at least seven lawsuits have been filed challenging the declaration. The argument at the core of each lawsuit is similar: Trump exceeded his authority and circumvented Congress in an attempt to achieve his signature campaign promise for an emergency that, plaintiffs argue, doesn't exist.

Hopefully, one or more of the lawsuits will gain traction.

(36,655 posts)Overriding the veto is completely up to the republicans.
They have the power here.
A few republicans can look tough on the first vote but the override vote will tell.
They want their cake and eat it too.
