During a January school shooting drill in Monticello, Indiana, teachers were shot “execution style” with compressed-air-powered pellet guns, resulting in welts and broken skin, a representative of the state’s largest teachers union said Wednesday.

Gail Zeheralis, director of government relations for the Indiana State Teachers Association, revealed the story during a hearing on a school safety bill Wednesday before the state senate’s education committee. The ITSA is fighting to include language in the bill prohibiting the use of such projectiles in future drills.

In the teachers union’s words, Zeheralis told lawmakers that “During active shooter drill, four teachers at a time were taken into a room, told to crouch down and were shot execution style with some sort of projectiles – resulting in injuries to the extent that welts appeared, and blood was drawn.”

The Indianapolis Star confirmed the claim with two unnamed teachers, one of whom said that members of the local sheriff’s office running the drill told them: “This is what happens if you just cower and do nothing [during an active shooter scenario].” The Star’s sources said teachers weren’t made aware ahead of time that they could be shot.

Not to sound like 'internet tough guy' but I'm a relatively large male, and I have to say, I'd have gotten up immediately, put both hands on the chest of the asshole cop that just shot me, shoved, firmly, and said ... whats in my subject line.

Why are they using any sort of actual projectiles during a drill? Don't they know people can be grievously injured? What if one of them turned at the wrong moment and took a pellet in the eye? During a drill?

What you do during a drill is tap them on the shoulder and say "bang you're dead." It's a FUCKING SIMULATION.

They punished these teachers for "not doing the right thing" with PAIN.

I did theater for 20 years, and we were taught ANY gun onstage, even a starter's pistol with blanks or a fake prop, is never to be pointed directly at a person. There's always a chance that powder or debris will be ejected from blank rounds, and you want to make sure that doesn't go flying at someone. It's so important to remember that you even follow this practice with a fake prop gun that cannot fire in case props get inadvertently switched or swapped out at the last minute.

No tough guy here. The minute I got hit with a pellet that made a mark and drew blood during a staged drill, I would QUIT my job. In the middle of the drill. Fuck that noise if I'm not getting hazard pay. Being a teacher in a warzone with combat training isn't worth that.

Definitely people sometimes find that they have to gather makeshift weapons and fight back.

But they would KNOW that they were in an active shooter situation. The sheriffs here took advantage of the fact that the teachers thought they were dealing with friendly instructors.

I think that more psychological screening should be done for law enforcement. I really believe that many people join for the wrong reasons.

15. As a former federal LEO...

we were always wearing extensive protective gear when engaging in such drills and still had participants that were occasionally inured by projectiles. Performing these drills without briefing the participants about the scenario and failing to provide them with protective attire is both extremely negligent and malicious. Unfortunately this type of deplorable behavior by law enforcement, especially local, seems to be becoming more of the norm rather than the exception.

as soon as this became public. The probability that this will damage cooperative efforts between the school system and local law enforcement is high.

I've been shot with a bb gun before. It hurts. Bu then we all agreed to the rules. No more than 3 pumps (if so armed) and no close range shooting. Young, stupid and before paintball. We even wore eye protection after a while.

These assholes broke the rules.

I’ve been to Monticello, Indiana. Not that far from where my wife is from. They used to have a real old fashioned soda fountain where you could get a black raspberry soda made like in the 20’s. 1920s that is. As podunk as a place comes.

And these people think they are stalwart Americans? They are fucking sheep. Try that shit in any big city and it would not end well. Hell, try that in any city here in Florida!
