House committee sends new letter to IRS demanding Trump's tax returns
Source: CNN
(CNN)House Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal is not backing down on his request for six years of the President Donald Trump's personal and business tax returns, he writes In a new letter sent Saturday to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig.
In a two-page letter, Neal writes that he believes his committee is well within its rights to see the President's tax returns and that he expects a decision from the IRS within the next 10 days.
"I expect a reply from the IRS by 5:00 p.m. on April 23, 2019. Please know that if you fail to comply, your failure will be interpreted as a denial of my request," Neal writes.
The letter leans heavily into the committee's legal rational for the returns and Neal writes that, "I am aware that concerns have been raised regarding my request, and the authority of the committee. Those concerns lack merit. Moreover, judicial precedent commands that none of the concerns raised can legitimately be used to deny the committee's request."

The 1 about IRS official denies a lawful request means 5 years in federal prison?

(868 posts)and capitol police arrest the IRS official that has made the decision to violate the law?
Then ask him under oath, what led him openly and willingly to violate the law that is direct
violation of his oath of office as well the law?
Provide him a Public Defender for 10 minutes with legal council prior to walking in the Committee to answer the charges against him.Heaven forbid they are held accountable for their crimes against HUMANITY.

(33,643 posts)Now, it's 10 more days, and all he's asking for is a DECISION ...
This is mealy-mouthed bullshit if you ask me. THERE AIN'T NO F***ING DECISION TO BE MADE ON THEIR END.
This letter should've been a threat of impeachment (or at minimum the referral of criminal charges to DoJ) of Rettig if the documents that he is REQUIRED BY LAW to furnish are not handed over by, say, this Friday.

(767 posts)The third page should have listed the laws which would be broken if he did not comply. I think the corrupt criminals will just try to beat the clock and STALL for time. We do not know if this criminal is sent to jail will another CLOWN take his place? I understand these papers are not hard to find and deliver, but the clowns will pretend they have to "find" the papers and "print" the papers. The clowns have to be told they will be subject to a penalty if they do NOT do their job............

Our democratic house is just chock full of milquetoast, isn't it? Not to worry. On the 23rd, another "strongly-worded" letter will provide yet another deadline, probably with "and this time, i really mean it!!111!!"

(15,642 posts)The tRumpistas are laughing. Why not 72 hours!? End of the day Monday? Geezus!
"The letter leans heavily into the committee's rationale"? Like the tRumpistas don't know the law? How the hell do they think tRump has been able to get away with his con the past 50 years? Lawyers that know the law!
So here's what we'll see next:
On April 22 the IRS will respond requesting another 14 days because they need to, oh I don't know, finish their detailed review of the massively long tax return to redact any information regarding 2nd and 3rd parties that falls under the strict privacy requirements of the Privacy Act (this takes weeks but we're trying to speed that and complete it within two weeks -- we'll let you know if we need more time in about 12 days or so) or some other bullshit. That the Dems will then say: "Okay, that's it! But after that we mean business!"
I was a bureaucrat. I understand process. But I'm beginning to get really pissed.

(10,252 posts)to arrest Charles Rettig for failure to follow the law? I doubt Bad Boy Barr would issue an arrest warrant. Why is he extending the grace period to April 23? Gosh, why can't Dems get tough with Trump's criminal enablers? I'm sick of the MF and his neo-Fascist enablers.

(18,628 posts)I don't think they have guts to arrest anyone. It would be too disruptive and create a war.
Either they have to gear up for a massive battle or concede that Trump is above the law.
I expect we will see sternly phrased requests continuing until the 2020 election.
