Venezuela: Russia urges US to abandon 'irresponsible' plan to topple Maduro

Source: Guardian

Secretary of state meanwhile slammed Russian meddling in the country: ‘We don’t want anyone messing around with Venezuela’
Tom Phillips in Caracas
Sun 5 May 2019 15.38 EDT

Washington and Moscow traded barbs over Venezuela on Sunday with Russia’s foreign minister urging the United States to abandon its “irresponsible” plan to depose Nicolás Maduro and his US counterpart slamming Russian meddling in the South American country.

. . .

Any US attempt to topple Maduro through force would bring “grave consequences,” Lavrov reportedly warned.

. . .

Sol Castro, a retired university professor who attended one protest in west Caracas, said she feared the solution to Venezuela’s crisis increasingly appeared to lie in foreign hands.

“[It feels like] we may be approaching an end … but [also] that we’re only pawns in a larger game where superpowers, or former superpowers, or superpower wannabes will decide when and how this ends,” Castro said.

Its only bravado, and to gain Latin votes. I have been telling Latinos to stop believing this administration will do something to help Venezuela, but they refuse to loose the hope and when 2020 comes around, they will vote for the buffoon...it is very frustrating.

That would be the only good thing this administration could do, to help end the Maduro regime, but they won't do it because the buffoon got his marching orders from his boss, Putin.

The irony of it is Moscow gives less than a rat's ass about Assad and Maduro... They only prop them up because if they were to fall to popular revolt then Moscow would be very scared about their own citizens getting ideas...

He wants to make sure everyone understands that it is "Putin The Great" who gives the orders to the buffoon and his minions.

The sad truth is that ignorance is so rampant in our country, the lack of historical knowledge is amazing, the lack of understanding of what has happened in other countries, and how it has happened is going to be the cause of the decline, ignorance has been promoted with a purpose, and I am afraid that it is winning.

People think that "It Can't Happen Here", and they are wrong, it is happening and unless the military, the CIA, and the FBI do not become corrupted and understand that the time to bring this administration down has arrived, it will not happen. Once the regime gets hold of the military it becomes impossible for the citizens to get rid of the regime. Marching and going out on the streets to demonstrate does nothing, it only helps the regime give the appearance of democracy, then they become so entitled and sure of their power that they start apprehending, torturing and killing the demonstrators, and they will do it under the disguise that elements not associated with the regime, those rogue criminals did it, but justice will never be done to those rogue people, the laws and the constitution will be changed to assure the regime lives for ever.

This is real people, Democratic leaders must start getting serious about fighting with all they have this corruption, or we will all be doomed. Now we have people from the military completely corrupt, Flynn and Kelly, how many more are there that we don't know about?

From all I've read and heard, the upper echelons don't care for him all that much. It seems that when he gives them stupid marching orders (any time he opens his mouth, essentially) they push back or slow-walk it. A good example would be the idiotic military parade he wanted to have in DC. I seem to recall that when he wanted to send troops to the border, he was told in no uncertain terms that the military can't and wouldn't act as law enforcement on American soil.

The difference between the US and, say, Venezuela is that in the latter it appears the military leadership is packed to the gills with cronies, which isn't the case here. Here in the States, military personnel swear an oath to the Constitution, not to the President as a person. They're also taught that if given an illegal order, they have a duty to disobey that order.

I don't think it's likely that US troops will be deployed inside the country in order to put down demonstrators. Trump is stupid and corrupt enough to try to order such a thing, but I have enough respect and trust in the military to believe that they'd refuse to do so. Some may think that I'm being overly optimistic, but YMMV.

Allot of Democrats have actually taken the same stance as Russia. Tulsi Gabbard, Bernie Sanders, Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and many others.

What the Trump administration is doing is encouraging violence, where people end up dying as we have seen before. I don't want to see beautiful Venezuela turn into another Libya or Syria. I dont think anyone here should be taking that side of the fence. I'm with Tulsi Gabbard on this one, and let's simply wait for the next presidential election and encourage the United Nations to monitor it. Let's encourage democracy not bloodshed.

The Venezuelan people, I repeat myself, it is the VENEZUELANS who want USA intervention, if Russia gets hols of Venezuela it will be the end of South and Central America, he will use the platform to "conquer" the USA, make no mistake about it.

This is more serious than people think. Venezuela MUST BE helped to get rid of the Maduro regime, to not do it is to become an accomplice of Russia (Putin) and the Venezuelan regime.

Shame on those Democrats to be against it, it is the Venezuelan people who should decide, not them, and I repeat myself, the Venezuelan people need to get rid of the Regime that houses Iranians, Russians, Chinese, Hezbollah, FARC, Cubans, and other terrorist groups who will eventually want to pay a visit to the USA, then the lie of "Died Defending His/Her Country" will become true because we will have to defend against them here at home.

Ask yourselves this, when has it been to USA advantage to agree with Putin? or any other Russian leader?

Are you kidding? Have you seen, with your own eyes, what Venezuela has become? Please inform yourself, Venezuela is a dangerous place today, they will kill you for a sandwich...

People are hungry, it is a kleptocracy, the corruption is like nothing you can imagine, and the buffoon is taking Venezuela as his road map to do the same in the USA.

Venezuela IS NOT beautiful anymore. All the streets in Caracas have holes everywhere, you can't drive them, the infrastructure is crumbling, people go days without electricity, without water, the supermarkets are empty, people spend hours in a line to buy little food when it is available, the hospitals don't have sheets, toilet paper, medicines, people are dying, the regime takes protestors, incarcerates them, tortures them and some die, and these are usually young kids...the girls are taken to jail, raped, killed.

What are you talking about "I don't want to see beautiful Venezuela turn into another Libya or Syria."??? It is worst.

My family is from Colombia and Venezuela from my mom's side. My father's side is Ecuadorian. They are terrified of a US invasion and dont want to be bombed like Libya. Today you can buy a black slave in Libya for $400. Libya and Syria are still in a state of war with much of its infrastructure destroyed. Colombia is experiencing a genocide where its Afro-Colombian and indigenous activists are being assassinated every other day. Venezuela is trying to avoid that. The other day close to 500,000 people had a peace rally in support of their elected President and against Trump's meddling. They covered 10 city blocks. My family there claims the sanctions are making their lives more difficult every day and I know first hand. Over 8 million people voted for their president, and no other country has any right to take their votes away.

Venezuela is beautiful. The food, the women. Its gorgeous. I visit it often. My family in Colombia also visits it often for work and vacation. I am actually pretty hurt that youre going around calling my mother's country not beautiful. That's pretty offensive. Please be more understanding with new people to this website and be more accepting of differing views.

Are you a Trump supporter? If not, which Democrats are you suggesting are supporting Trump's coup attempts and sanctions that you're supporting? Im curious to know which Democrats youre talking about.

It's wonderful knowing you have been following what has been written here, and that you represent the sane and humane people of the Americas. It has always seemed bizarre that anyone would try to sell U.S. progressives the thought that anyone in Venezuela who's decent would want the oligarchy back in power.

You have undoubtedly noticed the length to which some have gone to intimidate Democrats. That's why it's almost a miracle when someone arrives who has personal, authentic, first hand experience who DOESN'T support the racist oligarchy. As Mark Twain has been credited with saying so long ago, "The truth is still putting on its boots, while a lie is half-way around the world."

Thank you, and welcome to D.U.

17. Your question about me supporting the buffoon?
Mon May 6, 2019, 01:47 PM
May 2019

Now I ask you, is your family part of the Venezuelan regime? I have family who lives in Venezuela, and they don't have it as good as yours does, only the people associated with the regime have it very good. And if you can go out at night when you visit then I have to think you have guards wherever you go, that is how Diosdado Cabello and all the crooks in the regime go out.

The only people there that dread a USA intervention are those associated with the regime, imagine if the USA helps get rid of the regime, their cash cow will be eliminated, where are they going to rob money from?

I don't support the buffoon, but you fail to understand the repercussions of Russia taking over Venezuela, those with the regime will eventually be outed as well, they have it good for now, robbing like crazy, no accountability, they get preferential dollars that the rest of the citizens cannot get, etc. And I hope that when a good administration comes to power in the USA that all the Chavistas who stole a lot of money, who live in Miami in El Doral and Weston, FL will be found and disposed of their fortunes that were not earned.

Don't talk to me about how beautiful Venezuela is, I know the facts, you seem to be seeing your facts from another side.

I never said there are Democrats who support the buffoon's ideas of intervention in Venezuela, on the contrary, they are against it and this is a call for the Venezuelan people, and only those in the regime who have robbed and given the country to terrorists are against toppling the Maduro regime. Chavizmo will go in history as the most corrupt regime to ever hold office in Venezuela, and those who have supported it are nothing but traitors. 10 city blocks? You are confused, unless you are talking about the legitimate president, Juan Guaido...Oh, I see, my mistake, you ARE talking about the march for Juan Guaido and their calls for USA involvement...

"The other day close to 500,000 people had a peace rally in support of their elected President" Not true...They have never had marches with 500,000 people, those are from the opposition. #1 Maduro was not elected, he cheated, they have control of the CNE. The regime pays people to go to rallies, they give them rum or a bag of rice and the people are so hungry they go. What a farce...but never do they have 500,000 people, that is what the regime tries to show, they photoshop photos, and its easy to see how they cut/paste to show more people, they are not even good at that.

I think you are the one who needs to be more understanding, if your family is going there on business, who are they doing business with? There are no real businesses left in Venezuela, they have been appropriated and closed by the regime after taking all the money, or they have had to close doors and flee the country. If they are doing business with the regime then I understand why they have such a good time there.

I lived in Venezuela for many years, 1/2 my life, I know what Venezuela was then and what it is now, you can not fool me, you may be able to fool other people, but not me, I know first hand what is going on there.

I just don't seem to have the privileges that you and your family seem to have for me to enjoy the beauties of the country that are now left just for the few of the regime, I just seem to be only able to see the trash that surrounds the country from the broken infrastructure left by the regime.

frequently. You sound very much like the actual citizens I've heard from the country who know what condition the country was in during the time before Chavez, when the extremely racist, classist oligarchs sold the country out to foreign interests, and controlled all the profits together, while COMPLETELY kicking the average citizens to the curb, denying them living wages decent enough they could afford the most meager housing, and NO access to education, not a chance of receiving medical treatment, so many people never receiving help throughout their entire lives, living in unsantary, completely unsafe houses, with tin roofs, as you yourself mentioned, without adequate plumbing, without even any basic concrete foundations under the flimsy, cheap houses, ready to wash down the mountain sides in heavy rains, fatal mudslides, or flash fires racing from one shack to another as whole neighborhoods would perish with no access to fire hydrants, firemen, always at the mercy of the elements, forever.

When Chavez was elected, and reduced the astonishing, amoral breaks the foreign oil companies were getting from the oligarchs, and started spending the righteous amount of profits taken for the nation itself, instead of the dirty, greedy, racist oligarchs and their spawn, they were able to start replacing the shacks with houses with cement foundations, running water, indoor plumbing, decent, safe walls and roofs, and then start educating, feeding, and allowing medical treatment for the masses who had been simply ignorned, shunned, hated by the very white european-descended clowns who had owned and abused the country and the resources from the first time the swine invaded and started a never ending pattern of vicious treatment of the helpless, powerless poor.

Anyone can break through the fog of ignorance here in the States by simply realizing he/she has learned nada from our own system, from the corporate media which has managed our perceptions for us from infancy, and start learning, FINALLY, about the other people we have been unaware of all these long years.

I am glad to see your posts, and it's excellent knowing an authentic person has joined us who has a moral view of life, a real conscience. People like that are in real demand, as there has been a shortage, as you've probably noticed. Some times we haven't been able to see the truth through the obsessive, aggressive, hate-driven right-wing trolls!

....and it failed, spectacularly.

Chicken-hawk politicians rarely have a grip on reality. He tried to prop up a puppet who worshiped the USA...in an area that was wary of US involvement. If he got someone that was "middle of the road", that is, commend Chavez while recommending "transitional" policies, such selling a percentage of oil assets, etc.

But instead, he wanted it all...and lost it all. Because of greed, Russia is going to regain another foothold in Central-South America.
