Republicans, Democrats take opposite views on nixing the Electoral College

WASHINGTON — A majority of Americans say that the United States should amend the Constitution to do away with the Electoral College in favor of a national popular vote.

But their answers also have a lot to do with how they voted in the last presidential election.

A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that 53 percent of Americans support a move to a popular vote, while 43 percent believe the country should continue to elect its presidents using the Electoral College.

But an overwhelming 78 percent of those who voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 believe the country should adopt a national popular vote. Clinton won the popular vote in the last presidential election by nearly 3 million votes but still lost the presidential contest in the Electoral College, 232 to 306.

Why should any person's vote count more? The EC has gifted us two MAJOR LOSERS - the tongue-tied, alcoholic, war-starter, GWB, and the current twisto occupier of the office- Drumpf. Nuff said. F the EC!

2. My aunt the Republican nut posted about this on Facebook

Some crap about how many counties voted for Trump, as if the number of counties has anything to do with it. These are numeous counties in this country with less than a thousamd people. My dad used to do the same thing, but with how many square miles of the country were red. I just rolled my eyes and moved on.

4. I've seen that baloney all over Facebook

And the map colored a bright shade of red for every county, and the comments from them are always something like "Look how much of the country voted for Trump!!!11!! He's OUR President!!11!1"

My typical response is to tell them that Los Angeles County has a population greater than 40 of the states, and that that little corner of California has 10 times the population of that big state, Montana. They usually don't care, but they jump all over me and it just makes me smile!!

Another response is to remind them about Clark County in Nevada, which has about 75% of that state's population. There are some gigantic counties in Nevada that have about 800 people in them, or something like that. Empty land doesn't vote - PEOPLE vote, for crying out loud!

This kind of logic is for the desperate on the wrong side of history.

6. My response to Dad was similar. "square miles can't vote."

Dad was always a conservative, but by the time he came up with the talking point, he was a good 10 years into his time as a Rush Limbaugh listener. He play conservsa-blather all day long, and I'd make arguments against what was on. Dad just brushed me off as an ignorant youngster.
