Trump's Taxes: N.Y. Lawmakers Move Closer to Allowing Release of His State Returns

Source: New York Times

ALBANY — As the standoff over President Trump’s federal tax returns deepens in Washington, New York State lawmakers say they intend to advance a bill on Wednesday to allow congressional committees to see Mr. Trump’s New York State returns.

State Senator Brad Hoylman, a Manhattan Democrat, confirmed on Tuesday that the State Senate has enough votes to ensure passage of a bill allowing the commissioner of the New York Department of Taxation and Finance to release any state tax return requested by a leader of one of three congressional committees for any “specific and legitimate legislative purpose.”

A tax return from New York — where the president has the headquarters of his business empire and a home in Trump Tower — could contain much of the same financial information as a federal return, which Mr. Trump has steadfastly refused to release. On Monday, the Treasury Department denied a request from House Democrats for six years of the president’s federal returns, setting up a likely court battle that could reach the Supreme Court.

“The news of yesterday makes New York’s role even more crucial,” Mr. Hoylman said. He has described his bill as “assisting Congress in its oversight role.”

Since NY uses e-file now it is less obvious but yes you have to include your federal schedules. eggplant May 2019 #7
Even if you don't attach the Federal return, the state probably accesses it. lagomorph777 May 2019 #6

one has to attach the Federal return to the state tax return.

Is that the case in NY? If it is, then NY can release his Federal returns as well.

All I know is that when I file my NYS return, I do not file my federal return.

This has been the case for a long time. For the last five years, I had to include my Schedule C, D, and form 8949.

So NYS probably has all the NYS-relevant tax details.
