Pentagon to transfer $1.5 billion to border wall from Afghan forces, other areas

Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Acting U.S. Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan has approved the transfer of $1.5 billion to build more than 80 miles of barriers on the border with Mexico, U.S. official said on Friday, including taking about $600 million in savings from an account meant for Afghan security forces.

The latest move comes on top of a March transfer of $1 billion in military money to fund President Donald Trump’s wall, something lawmakers were highly critical of.

“The funds were drawn from a variety of sources, including cost savings, programmatic changes and revised requirements, and therefore will have minimal impact on force readiness,” Shanahan said in a statement.

Shanahan said that the U.S. military had more than 4,000 service members on the border along with 19 aircraft.

They are getting at least 2 billion dollars more than they need. And to take that money from Afghanistan if beyond the pale since we have troops still stationed there. This administration is not anywhere close to the target in what they are doing.

from stirring up trouble, or eliminate school shootings.

Give me a fucking break! When the DoD and Trump asks for money for wars against Venezuela and Iran, Congress needs to say "NO! Take it from the Wall funding!"

I am being sarcastic here. Of course we are not at war in those countries unless cooler heads prevail.

https://ktla.com/2019/03/19/pentagon-lists-possible-project-cuts-in-california-to-pay-for-trumps-border-wall/
The Pentagon sent a 20-page list of military construction projects to Congress on Monday that might be slashed to pay for President Donald Trump’s wall along the Mexican border.

The document listed hundreds of projects envisioned around the U.S., including California, and the world worth around $12.9 billion.

The list named maintenance or upgrades on a fire emergency response station, electrical equipment, and ambulatory care at Camp Pendleton; airfield security improvements at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar; and a maintenance hangar at Travis Air Force Base.

Not all will be subject to cuts, the Defense Department wrote, making it difficult to determine exactly which would be vulnerable.

The document also named more than $100 million for water treatment plant improvements at Camp Lejeune and airfield security and other work at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station in North Carolina.

Hasn't it already been confirmed that the route of the proposed wall runs through huge areas of privately-owned land that the owners are not eager to sell? Won't land disputes be tied up in the courts forever? Precluding the building of pretty much any length of wall?
