Alabama state Senate passes near total abortion ban in direct challenge to Roe v. Wade

Source: NBC News

The Alabama state Senate on Tuesday approved a bill essentially banning abortion in the state, a move specifically aimed at challenging over 40 years of federal abortion protection under Roe v. Wade.

The bill, which passed 25-6, would make it a felony for a doctor to perform or attempt an abortion during any stage of pregnancy.

The House approved a version of the bill that had an exception for the mother's health, passing 74-3, then a Senate committee added an exception for rape and incest. Republicans in the Senate, however, suddenly tabled the rape and incest exemptions last week, leading to swift and vocal opposition from Democrats.

Democratic Sen. Bobby Singleton put up an amendment to make exceptions in the case of rape and incest again on Tuesday night. Four Republicans joined the seven Democrats present to vote for the exceptions, but the measure failed in a roll call vote.

Singleton then accused proponents of the legislation of having "raped the state of Alabama with this bill." Governor Kay Ivey is expected to sign the bill into law.

I live in DC and travel to Florida often for vacation. Depending on the route, I never stop to gas up or eat in Georgia, South Carolina or Alabama. I make sure to get those chores before those shitty states.

NOT A DIME!

On edit: Not that Florida is any better, but the Keys feel like another planet. I love it there

but I wonder about the "life of the fetus". Several years ago either Indiana or Ohio (I forget which) passed a bill that was so poorly written it would have outlawed c-sections. It was vetoed by the "pro-life" governor after the state's AG pointed that out.

My niece had a c-section at 26 weeks, it was the only chance the baby had (it was a rare situation) and, thankfully, all went well and he is thriving today despite only weight 1 pound 2 ounces at birth but a poorly written bill might have made it impossible.

Clearly they are so very much HOLIER than us!

A Pedophile deserves a lot more respect than any desperate woman who has no way to raise a child, and most surely no child to be molested by dirty old judges.

"You screwed; you're screwed." (pardon my French).

Spite explains so much of what Republicans do.

It's the same in Argentina with the anti-choice crowd, you'll recall from last year. They consider even birth control unholy - but of course will rant and rave every time they see a dark-skinned woman with her baby.

being a political pawn. I do not think he will vote the way the Christo fascists are counting on. That's going to be a fun rude awakening to watch. Still in the case that I am wrong, we must persevere and make sure this doesn't become a reality. A boycott is a good idea but so would a massive protest right in the face of the men (and it was all men with the exception of the governor) who tried to pull this nonsense. "Why does Alabama hate women?" should be the rallying cry.
"They" are going to try and throw everything but the kitchen sink at us with 2020 looming. It is going to be very ugly. It is a huge wager on their part. It could backfire on them massively and I hope it does.

All the more so because, like many red states, Alabama is a major net recipient of federal funds.

Reminds me of my years in Ole Miss. Every other white voter you'd meet was a rabid "fuck the feds" type.

And Ole Miss is practically a federal satellite - utterly dependent on gummint pork for its very existence (with very little to show in return, I can tell you).

Huntsville, AL, was the same. I'm sure that describes a number of other places in Bama as well.

They are highly educated people in the legal profession, and heavily involved in civics.
They are not whacko right wing evangelicals (moderate Roman Catholics).
They've always told me that Alabama isn't nearly as red as those who've been stacked on the state legislature.
They say it's all about the gerrymandering.

Reminds me of some very well-informed progressives I knew in Mississippi. I always admired their ability to hold fast to their views, in the face of overwhelming opposition.

Would that more white voters in the Deep South were like your relatives.

As you know, if you exclude Black and other minority voters, Alabama, like most of the region, is something like 80% Rapepublican.

Still, something tells me that'll change over time. Your relatives are a very good example of that.
