8-year-old boy accidentally shoots mother at baseball game, gun owner charged

Source: NBC News

A Tennessee mother was hospitalized in critical condition after her 8-year-old son accidentally shot her at a college baseball game, police said.

The gun's owner, Charles McFarland Jr., was arrested and faces charges of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon.

The mother and son were at the annual Babe Howard Classic game Tuesday night at the U.S.A Baseball Stadium in Millington, about 30 minutes north of Memphis, when the boy found a loaded gun while playing inside an antique World War II jeep belonging to McFarland, authorities said.

The jeep had been on display as part of a celebration the stadium holds for veterans, the Millington Police Department said in a press release.

Yes, very negligent. There is no excuse for unsecured firearms.

A gun in a vehicle needs to be locked up and unloaded. If it doesn't have a locked area, then you add one, or you don't carry in that vehicle.

What he did is such a stupid thing. I live in an area full of guns. I don't know anyone who would do something so stupid.

I have carried my gun in my car when traveling. I keep it in its holder in the car body, unlocked. But I'm IN the car. When I reach my destination, the first thing I grab is my gun, put it in my luggage, and take it in with me.

is that the gun was in the bag from a previous use, and the bag was mistakenly left in the jeep for this show. Bad inventory control.
Still, no excuse.

WWII “Jeep”, was really basic, slapped together to be versatile and a snap to repair/replace, so I doubt it had one at all! It’s been a while but I don’t think my Jeep when I was in the army in the early 70’s had one either.

a back passenger side window reach in and grab a handgun out of the console. After cops left at 4:30am, someone broke the driver's window and took one out of the driver's door pocket.

I know he had at least one more on him.

Too many guns.
