Toddler dies in U.S. custody after being detained at border

Source: Associated Press

The 2-year-old is the fourth known minor to have died in custody since December.

By Associated Press

HOUSTON — A Guatemalan official says a 2½-year-old migrant child has died after crossing the border, becoming the fourth minor known to have died after being detained by the Border Patrol since December.

Tekandi Paniagua, the consul for Guatemala in Del Rio, Texas, said Wednesday that the boy had entered the United States with his parent at El Paso, Texas, in early April. Paniagua said the boy had a high fever and difficulty breathing, and authorities took him to a children's hospital where he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

The boy remained hospitalized for about a month before dying Tuesday. The Washington Post first reported his death.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection didn't respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

If the child arrived with pneumonia and was hospitalized (quickly?) for a month it looks like US authorities did what they could to restore his health. (Assuming hospitals would do that in the case of this baby)

In this case the US authorities seem less cruel and medieval than all the other refugees they inflict good ole fashioned USA USA cruelty to?

Trump illegally forces these asylum seekers in dangerous, unsanitary makeshift camps in Mexico. Where they get sick and have no healthcare.

By the time their number is called by CBP to process their asylum request, many are in bad shape. Or, seeing their kids' health deteriorate, desperate parents cross the border illegally rather than continue to wait. That's what it appears happened here.

Trump created this crisis.

But what I was getting at is that Trump has a stronghold with the pro life crowd and many of them support keeping kids locked up like this. It's scary.

They are illegally slow-walking asylum requests, forcing the migrants to live in dangerous, unsanitary makeshift camps along the border inside Mexico waiting to present themselves for asylum.

The law is that asylum seekers are supposed to be able to present themselves at any port of entry and have their asylum requests processed. Trump is not allowing that, forcing asylum seekers to huddle for weeks or months in unsanitary, crowded conditions in makeshift camps along the border inside Mexico, waiting for their number to be called to present themselves for asylum. I'm surprised more kids haven't died. But I imagine we don't hear about the ones who die in the camps in Mexico waiting to have their asylum requests received.

Trump created this humanitarian disaster.

"What else where they suppose to do?"

A pretty short-sighted question. At best.

Process asylum seekers in timely manner.. Rather than finding excuses not to do so. But I get the consistent narrative... righteous Americanism at the expense of all else. I'm guessing you may even pretend otherwise. Which given the other attempts, will be most bemusing indeed.
