Texas House passes 'Save Chick-fil-A' bill critics say will discriminate against LGBTQ community
Source: CNN
The Texas House passed legislation on Tuesday that supporters say provides religious protections, but Democrats and critics argue would allow discrimination against the state's LGBTQ community.
Nicknamed the "Save Chick-fil-A" bill, Senate Bill 1978 was approved by the Republican-led Texas House in a 79-64 vote Tuesday. The measure initially passed the Senate in a 19-12 vote last week, and now returns to the chamber for final passage before heading to the governor's desk for approval. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has indicated he will sign the bill into law.
The measure, authored by Republican Sen. Bryan Hughes, prohibits the government from taking "adverse action" against any individuals or businesses based on membership, support or donations to religious groups. The bill was amended on Monday to remove language that would have allowed the Texas attorney general to bring action against any government entity or employee that refused to comply with the bill.
The legislation comes after the San Antonio City Council in March approved a new concessions contract for the San Antonio International Airport -- on the condition that fast food chain Chick-fil-A be excluded. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced an investigation that month into whether the city violated Chick-fil-A's religious liberty with its decision.

So their right to discriminate is being infringed upon.

The truth is: Chik 'whatever' probably will NOT get a spot in the airport -- because they are not open 7 days/week.

(2,840 posts)I read this part
but Democrats and critics argue would allow discrimination against the state's LGBTQ community.
And a quote from one of the opponents (which the MSN website won't let me cut and paste) saying this act could allow discrimination against LGBT people.
Two issues:
A) I don't see anything here that, contra the OP, establishes a right to discriminate; and
B) The lede says the act would allow such discrimination, but even the chief legislative opponent only says "could allow". Each verb means very different things.
"Could" denotes a possibility of a thing occurring, whereas "would" in this case denotes something that is conditional but is a certainty within those conditions. It seems that the use of "would" in the lede is very misleading or even deceptive.
And not for nothing, but I've never found a Chick-Fil-A (that I've gone to at least) to be discriminatory. A lesbian-couple friends of mine and I ate there just a few weeks ago, and there was no problem. And my younger son's BB teammate, who is gay, works at that same store. So I've not found these assertions of discrimination to be within my realm of experience.
Just my 2 cents.

(12,132 posts)that is individual stores. No matter how great the individuals running a particular store are, the money you pay them eventually goes back to the corporation which uses it to fund anti-LGBTQ groups.
I've mentioned here before that one of our local stores opened on the Sunday of the Pulse shooting and donated food to first-responders and I am pretty sure it was all voluntary on their part. Great people and I applauded them locally but I will never give that company a dime because I don't want my dimes to go to anti-LGBTQ programs.
I probably don't know where every dime I spend goes but they were hateful enough to be proud to say that some of their dimes go to hateful groups and I won't take part in that.
Even though I really do like their food. Even though their employees are really terrific at customer service. Even though they are close to both my home and work and it would be very convenient to eat there. I can't do everything to fix everything but I can at least not eat there.
