Judge says Deutsche Bank, Capital One can give Trump financial records to House Democrats
Source: CNBC
A federal judge in New York City on Wednesday said Deutsche Bank and Capitol One can turn over financial documents related to President Donald Trump and his businesses in response to subpoenas from House Democrats.
Judge Edgardo Ramoss ruling came after a hearing at which lawyers for Trump, his three older children, and the Trump Organization argued that the subpoenas to the two banks should be quashed. His decision came two days after another federal judge, in Washington, D.C., said Trumps accountants at the firm Mazars LLP had to comply with a congressional subpoena for his financial records.
Deutsche Bank for years has been the main lender for Trump, whom other banks have avoided loaning money to because of his repeated bankruptcies. Capital One is in posssesion of financial records related to the Trump Organizations hotels. Neither bank had opposed the subpoeanas.
But the Trump familys lawyers, in a lawsuit filed in late April, challenged the demands for financial documents to the lenders, saying House Democrats were issued to harass President Donald J. Trump, to rummage through every aspect of his personal finances, his businesses, and the private information of the President and his family.
Trump has said he is fighting all the subpoenas issued by the Democratic-led House.

(188 posts)I wish the judge had said "shall" instead of "can". "Can" makes it sound optional.

(532 posts)I had the term "can" versus "shall" rule against me in a grievance promotion claim that cost me dearly because of the ruling as "can". But it was well worth it when when the regulation was required to be rewritten as a result of my complaint, which would affect others in the future as "shall", even until today in similar situations. The squeaky wheel sometimes really does get the grease, even for others.

Ramos called Mehtas opinion thorough, and quoted it in his own ruling.
Ramoss decision came after lengthy and contentious oral arguments, during which the judge took pain to grill both sides.
The private attorney representing Trump at the hearing Patrick Strawbridge of Consovoy McCarthy Park stammered as he attempted to respond to an initial volley of questions from Ramos.
