White House Wanted USS John McCain 'Out of Sight' During Trump Japan Visit

Source: Wall Street Journal

The White House wanted the U.S. Navy to move “out of sight” a warship named for the late Sen. John McCain, a war hero who became a frequent target of President Trump’s ire, ahead of the president’s visit to Japan last week, according to an email reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

In a May 15 email to U.S. Navy and Air Force officials, a U.S. Indo-Pacific Command official outlined plans for the president’s arrival that he said had resulted from conversations between the White House Military Office and the Seventh Fleet of the U.S. Navy. In addition to instructions for the proper landing areas for helicopters and preparation for the USS Wasp—where the president was scheduled to speak—the official issued a third directive: “USS John McCain needs to be out of sight.”

“Please confirm #3 will be satisfied,” the official wrote.

was covered this morning on MJ so it's out there.

But she is getting harder and harder in her defense for Republicans lately, even Joe Biden who had comforted her on the show after her dad had died of the same type of cancer that Biden's son had died from. Joe held her while she cried...a testament to his goodness and heart.

I think Megan is confused. She needs therapy, if she isn't already getting some...

(in another thread on this topic, it does say Trump ordered this)

Judy Lynn posted this, (first sentence, second paragraph at link below)

"On Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that on the president’s latest trip to Japan, he demanded the Navy move the U.S.S. John McCain “out of sight.”

The US Navy is in dire need of a Floating Brig ship class, and I can think of no more appropriate honor than to name the lead ship USS Donald J. Trump, with the rest of the class named after people in his administration.

And where most Naval vessels have "plank owner" crews, the people the Trump class are named after will be the "plank owner" inmates.

What is more disturbing is the enabling of this behavior. There is not a single person in Trump's orbit who is capable of saying no to him or telling him the truth.

Where was the person who could say NO, we're not getting the ship out of sight? No where. There is no person. It is madness.

"A tarp was hung over the ship’s name ahead of the president’s trip, according to photos reviewed by the Journal, and sailors were directed to remove any coverings from the ship that bore its name. After the tarp was taken down, a barge was moved closer to the ship, obscuring its name. Sailors on the ship, who typically wear caps bearing its name, were given the day off during Mr. Trump’s visit, people familiar with the matter said."

Stalin was infamous for having adversaries' pictures removed from historical photographs. Trump wants to go a step further and "disappear" things IRL that displease him. He probably knows damn well he'll never get a ship named after him, and he obviously hates it that McCain did. So his toadies disappeared that ship to keep him happy.

Why would anyone actually carry out such a request?

The fact someone in the white house made this request just goes to show how lowly they think of Trump. They literally don't think he could handle seeing the name McCain. That's just insane. This is a huge embarrassment to Trump. I don't understand why anyone would think this would be a good idea. If was anyone else I would think their incompetence would work in our favor, but sadly his base seems to celebrate this idiocy.

White House Wanted USS John McCain ‘Out of Sight’ During Trump Japan Visit
U.S. military officials worked to ensure President Trump wouldn’t see the warship that bears the name of the late senator, a frequent target of the president’s ire

By Rebecca Ballhaus and Gordon Lubold
Updated May 30, 2019 2:41 a.m. ET

The White House wanted the U.S. Navy to move “out of sight” the warship USS John S. McCain ahead of President Trump’s visit to Japan, according to an email reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

The ship was named after the father and grandfather of the late senator—a war hero who became a frequent target of Mr. Trump’s ire—and the senator’s name was added to the ship in 2018.

The name was changed in July to honor the senator. Fact.

Trump confirms the White House sought to hide the USS John McCain for his trip to Japan. “They thought they were doing me a favor because they know I am not a fan of John McCain," he says of the official who made the request, whom he called "well-meaning."

"One Navy sailor said that McCain sailors wearing their ship’s patches were even turned away from the president’s address."

To be exact it happened in 1969 when another petty little asshole had stolen (or shot his way into) the presidency. The carrier John F Kennedy had been slated to participate in the NASA program and to pick up the Apollo 11 capsule and crew when they returned from the moon, kinda of a big deal. Nixon couldn't live with that and replaced the JFK with the USS Hornet.

I had served on the Hornet until my discharge in 1968. I would like to think that, had I known it would be Hornet to make that history, I would have shipped over and would have been on the flight deck during the recovery.

But who could know?
