Trump Administration Sends Out Notices Of $500,000 Fines For Those In U.S. Illegally

Source: NPR

The Trump administration is seeking to fine some immigrants in the United States illegally hundreds of thousands of dollars for failing to take steps to leave after being ordered to do so, according to government documents obtained by NPR.

The Department of Homeland Security sent out a batch of notices across the country to targeted individuals ordering them to pay fines of up to nearly $500,000 for "failing to depart the U.S. as previously agreed," among other factors.

It's the latest hard-line effort by the administration as it clamps down on illegal immigration at the border and increases interior enforcement.

"It is the intention of ICE to order you pay a fine in the amount of $497,777," Lisa Hoechst, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer, wrote to Edith Espinal Moreno in a letter dated June 25, 2019, obtained by NPR from lawyers for Moreno.

Not sure of the law, but excessive fines seems an issue. This is like getting a speeding ticket for $45,000.00.

The Eighth Amendment to the United States Constitution states: “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.” This amendment prohibits the federal government from imposing unduly harsh penalties on criminal defendants, either as the price for obtaining pretrial release or as punishment for crime after conviction.

That applies to the #TrumpCamps too, especially since seeking asylum is not even a crime.

That is $182,500 a year, I was reading an article awhile back and they talked to a guy who had been under a deportation order for 10 years, that's damn close to two million dollars in fines.

and fined the employer- be it a homeowner or a corporation - *then* it might be effective.

All along, anyone on either side of the immigration debate well knows that the easy and effective solution would be to fine anyone EMPLOYING the undocumented person. If no one hired them, many if not most would leave, except for the true refugees. But that would discomfit the corporations and fat cats.

If anybody bothers to enforce it. You could argue that it's not worth enforcing because enforcement would cost more than the fine. And you'd be right.
