Trump administration drops citizenship question from 2020 census
BY JACQUELINE THOMSEN - 07/02/19 04:58 PM EDT
The Trump administration said Tuesday that it was dropping a citizenship question from the 2020 census, days after the Supreme Court ruled against the questions inclusion.
Former Obama White House lawyer Daniel Jacobson made the revelation in a tweet Tuesday, sharing a screenshot of an email he received from a Justice Department lawyer confirming the decision.
DOJ attorney Kate Bailey confirmed the decision in an email sent Tuesday to groups challenging the question, a copy of which was obtained by The Hill.
"We can confirm that the decision has been made to print the 2020 Decennial Census questionnaire without a citizenship question, and that the printer has been instructed to begin the printing process," Bailey wrote.
Justice Department spokeswoman Kelly Laco also confirmed that the citizenship question would not be included on the census.
President Trump had initially said after the ruling that he wanted to delay the 2020 census in order to continue to try to add a citizenship question to the form.

One of the characteristic features of Donald Trumps presidency is how he has taken the institutions and practices that used to be considered outside partisanship and above the interests of any individual, and turned them to his own ends.
In some cases, its for his own personal aggrandizement, as hes doing by turning the traditional Fourth of July event from a celebration of the countrys independence to a celebration of himself. In others, as with the 2020 Census, its to use the federal government to advance the interests of the Republican Party.
....
Most importantly, Trump seems to think that the census is some kind of enforcement arm of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, attempting to find out if somebodys a citizen as opposed to an illegal. As the Census Bureau itself notes, it does not share information with law enforcement agencies.
That too is something Trump might or might not be aware of, but what we can say for certain is that he would like people to believe its not true. Nothing would make Trump happier than if every immigrant thought that filling out the census form would mean that ICE agents are going to be busting down their doors. The more frightened immigrants are of census takers, the less likely theyll be to answer the census, which will accomplish the goal of enhancing the political power of Republicans and whites.

The Trump administration is dropping plans to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census, the Justice Department confirmed in an email Tuesday just days after the Supreme Court described the rationale for the question as contrived.
The decision to back away from the controversial question was a victory for civil rights advocates concerned that the query would lead to an inaccurate count of immigrant communities that could skew representation and federal funding.
