RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia's governor led gun-control supporters in chants of "enough is enough!" outside the Capitol Tuesday after summoning legislators to debate and vote on new gun laws.

Gov. Ralph Northam ordered lawmakers back for a special session to consider a wide range of gun-control measures, said people need "votes and laws, not thoughts and prayers" after a Virginia Beach employee shot and killed a dozen people in a city building on May 31.

GOP lawmakers criticized Northam as trying to exploit the tragedy for political gain in the leadup to Tuesday's session. Republican leaders who control both houses of the legislature signaled they wouldn't pass gun controls, focusing instead on increasing criminal penalties after gun crimes.

Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment filed surprise legislation Monday to broadly ban guns in any government building, but even that faced uncertain passage in the House.

Laws need to pass. Each of the bill of rights amendments are enforced with limitations for the greater welfare except the 2nd amendment. Why is it not against the law for individuals to carry firearms into crowded places, but shouting 'fire' in the same places result in serious consequences?

Children should not be afraid to be in school.

Tired of my children coming home after the school year starts and hearing them talk about the best places to hide in case of a shooting instead of school related stuff.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Less than two hours after beginning a special session called in response to a mass shooting, Virginia lawmakers abruptly adjourned Tuesday and postponed any movement on gun laws until after the November election.

Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam summoned the Republican-led Legislature to the Capitol to address gun violence in the wake of the May 31 attack that killed a dozen people in Virginia Beach. He put forward a package of eight gun-control measures and called for “votes and laws, not thoughts and prayers” in response to the massacre.

But not a single vote was cast on the legislation. Republican leaders said the session was premature and political motivated. They assigned the state’s bipartisan crime commission to study policy proposals that might have prevented the shooting.

In response, angry Democrats said Republicans were beholden to gun manufactures and afraid of passing commonsense laws they know will save lives.
