What do you do for a fractured shoulder?

Most fractures of the scapula can be treated without surgery. Treatment involves immobilization with a sling or shoulder immobilizer, icing, and pain medications. The patient will be examined for additional injuries. About 10% to 20% of scapula fractures require surgery.

One in three adults aged 50 and over dies within 12 months of suffering a hip fracture. Older adults have a five-to-eight times higher risk of dying within the first three months of a hip fracture compared to those without a hip fracture. This increased risk of death remains for almost ten years.

I think he made it up, he can just wear a sling to cover for it if he needs to make an appearance and in the meantime hope the Moscow Mitch meme blows over.

You don't just fall and break a shoulder, unless you're already fragile. I think it has to be whacked pretty hard. I broke my scapula years ago when a horse fell on me and slammed me into a brick wall. It was unusual because it broke horizontally. Not much they can do for you, except pain pills.

... saying someone 'broke their shoulder' is a misnomer or euphemism.

It's going to be either a broken clavicle (collarbone) or scapula (shoulder blade) ... more likely the former.

Then of course you can tear various cartilage in the area like labrum and rotator cuff. But that's still not a 'broken shoulder'.

A shoulder is a joint, basically, like an elbow or knee.

While a broken 'arm' is also vague as you point out, I'd say it's less so than a 'shoulder' and also much more commonly used as a term.

It's not a big deal, but honestly I've never heard it said someone has a 'broken shoulder'. I'm sure it's 'said', but it's weird to me. Seems like you'd say 'Shoulder Blade' or 'Collarbone' or 'Arm' if it's the humerus, the other possible option.

89. Turtles have very odd shoulders
Sun Aug 4, 2019, 06:48 PM
Aug 2019
The shell itself is made from broadened and flattened ribs, fused to parts of the turtle’s backbone (so that unlike in cartoons, you couldn’t pull a turtle out of its shell). The shoulder blades sit underneath this bony case, effectively lying within the turtle’s ribcage. In all other back-boned animals, whose shoulder blades sit outside their ribs (think of your own back for a start). The turtle’s torso muscles are even more bizarrely arranged.

This body plan – and particularly the odd location of the shoulder blades – is so radically different to that of all other back-boned animals that biologists have struggled to explain how it could have arisen gradually from the standard model, or what the intermediate ancestors might have looked like. Enter Hiroshi Nagashima from the RIKEN Center; he has found some answers by studying how the embryos of the Chinese soft-shelled turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis) shift from the standard body plan of other vertebrates to the bizarre configuration of adult turtles.

By comparing the embryos to those of mice and chickens, Nagashima showed that all three species start off with a shared pattern that their last common ancestor probably shared. It is only later that the turtle does something different, starting of a sequence of muscular origami that distorts its body design into the adult version.
...
The muscle plate in the lower half of the turtle’s body folds inwards along a line that runs down the turtle’s body. This line will eventually form the edge of the shell and it’s called the carapacial ridge. Meanwhile, the second pair of ribs (r2 in the image below) grows outwards and swing forwards over the shoulder blade (sc in the image below). A similar thing happens over the animal’s hips. These two crucial events – the folding of the muscle plate and the growth of the second ribs – bring the shoulder blade within the confines of the ribcage. Both steps are possible because the turtle’s ribs stop growing early on in its development and no one yet know why this happens.

I have absolutely NO good wishes for this evil, treasonous piece of shit. I really hope he has complications and .....I'll quit there. I could go on and on....I hate this mf'er so much. He has done more to destroy our government than any foreign enemy could ever hope to accomplish.

Hope he continues to run...and gets his ass handed to him by the people of Kentucky. Wake the hell up, Kentucky. Sweet Jesus! You're killing this nation!

Praying, that the injuries are much worse than reported.

Hoping that he suffers to a degree commensurate with his evil deeds.

With most of the posters here or at least a majority. I do NOT believe this and think it's a ploy to stay hidden for awhile. I do think the "Moscow Mitch" taunts are getting to him too. Clearly he thought he could get away scot free from his treason and treasonous activities and now that he see's that that's not true it's getting to him. Good! WE need to keep the pressure on him as far as his Russian AND Chinese "interests" go.

If he DID in fact actually fracture something besides our Constitution then...…… YAY!

and that "Moscow Mitch" is just the beginning.

He will be exposed for treason. All the financial dealings (with Russia AND China) will come to light. He now wants out.

This is the first step in heading for the exit door.

But he can STILL be prosecuted.

May he rot in jail.

much of that Kentucky bourbon maybe? Surprised they let him go home. A fracture at his age is something I would think they would at least keep you overnight for. Could be blood clots form. Not sure I believe he actually fell through. I think he’s hiding out.

.....until the day he dies, as a Senator. He's got the health care he won't allow the rest of us to have. We pay for it.

If the average citizen fell and broke a shoulder bone---it could be the beginning of an economic unraveling for them.
