Ohio Democrats press Trump on gun-control, health care during Dayton visit

DAYTON, Ohio—Two Ohio Democrats accompanying President Donald Trump on his visit to Dayton Wednesday said they asked the president to push for greater gun-control measures in the wake of last weekend’s mass shooting.
The president responded only that he “will get things done,” according to U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, who joined Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley at a news conference following Trump’s visit.
Brown, a frequent critic of the president, said he urged Trump to pressure U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, to hold a vote on House-passed legislation to require background checks for all gun sales (right now, such checks don’t need to be done for sales done online or at gun shows).
Brown said that as Trump and other Republicans have focused on improving mental-health programs in response to shootings in Dayton and elsewhere, he told the president that it was important not to repeal the Affordable Care Act or cut Medicaid expansion, which covers mental health treatment. Trump has consistently pushed to repeal the ACA, passed by Democrats under President Barack Obama.
