Report: Man wearing body armor, carrying tactical weapons arrested at Walmart in Springfield, MO

Source: KSDK-TV in St. Louis, MO

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A man was arrested Thursday afternoon after police said he walked through a Walmart store in Springfield, Missouri, armed with loaded tactical weapons and more than 100 rounds of ammunition.

According to Springfield NBC Station KY3, police responded to the Walmart: Neighborhood Market at Republic Road for an active shooter call at around 4:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found the man wearing body armor and military fatigues. Police said he was also armed with tactical weapons, according to the report.

Police said the man was recording himself walking through the store, which alarmed an employee. The employee then pulled the fire alarm to evacuate the store.

KY3's report said the man used an emergency exit but was spotted by an off-duty firefighter, who held the man at gunpoint until the police could arrive.

Last weekend, I drove through again. Dick’s is still in business, but Gun Town is boarded up with a for sale sign on the building.

From this link

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1040676

The man who is said to be white and in his 20s was detained by the armed firefighter until police arrived at the Walmart Neighborhood Market, police said in a statement. The man in body armor had been seen pushing a shopping cart and recording video of himself on a cellphone, police told NBC affiliate KYTV.

... snip ...

Though police did not name the person, police and online jail records indicate Dmitriy Andreychenko, 20, had been arrested.

The man entered the store with a tactical rifle, a handgun and more than 100 rounds of ammunition, KYTV reported, citing police. He was said to have been stopped by the armed firefighter after leaving through an emergency exit.

Missouri is a permissive open carry state with local restrictions. That means that unless there is a local prohibition in Springfield, the yahoo did not commit any crime. (I can't wag any fingers, Arkansas is a permissive open carry state that prohibits local restrictions - any one who can lawfully possess a firearm has the right to openly brandish a weapon in public.)

Walmart and other retailers should ban weapons from their stores posting necessary signs. That would make someone swaggering around the store with a weapon at least guilty of trespassing. Would it stop all future slaughters in stores? Of course not. However, we cannot allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good.

Walmart and other retailers owe it to their customers and employees to do what they can and bar weapons from stores.

I am really unhappy that Walmart has taken this position supporting open carry in stores.

It is not only irresponsible, it's just dumb.

OK - plan B. When you see someone carrying a firearm. Yell "GUN!" and move smartly toward the door. It has the benefit of being both the truth and socially responsible. After the store clears, the manager will report to Walmart HQ what happened and why the store emptied. About the third time this happens, Walmart will change its policy.

Not unusual in a small town Walmart, because they act as Walmart's security force. (Walmart can't afford security or fair wages)

Went inside, and a young man with a holstered pistol on his hip was walking around the electronics section, pacing back and forth.

He was well dressed, but looked royally pissed off. I thought maybe he was plainclothes cop, but he had no badge showing.

I left the store. Whatever was going on there I don't want to be around it.

Our cops would show up for an armed idiot walking around Wal-Mart because open carry is illegal here. They'd probably show up for someone taking a crap in a dressing room, screaming obscenities and breaking mirrors. But they are not going to show up to scold some teen shoplifting nail polish, or for some fender-bender in the parking lot.

One thing I do respect our cops for is they'll quickly respond to babies or toddlers left alone in a car at any time, or pets in a car on hot days. I've seen them break windows for those calls.

Aug 2019

Updated 4:40 pm CDT, Friday, August 9, 2019

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — The Latest on arrest of man carrying a rifle and wearing body armor at a Springfield, Missouri, Walmart (all times local):

4:15 p.m.

Prosecutors have charged a 20-year-old man with making a terrorist threat in the second degree by causing a panic at a Walmart store in Springfield, Missouri.

Greene County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Patterson said in a news release Friday that Missouri protects the right to carry a firearm, but that right does not allow an individual to act in a reckless and criminal manner endangering other citizens.

A probable cause statement released Friday says Dmitriy Andreychenko recorded himself as he walked in the store carrying an "AR style rifle" slung across his chest and wearing a ballistic vest. He also had a handgun on his right hip.

The affidavit says he said he was recording himself in case somebody was going to tell him to leave. He said he wanted to know if Walmart honored the Second Amendment.

Dmitriy Andreychenko: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Instagram/Dmitriy Andreychenko
Dmitriy Andreychenko pictured on his Instagram page.

Dmitriy Andreychenko is accused of bringing more than 100 rounds of ammunition, a rifle, a handgun and body armor to a Missouri Walmart. The incident occurred on August 8 in the city of Springfield, 160 miles south of Kansas City at the Walmart Neighborhood Market. The store is located along Republic Road in the city.

The Springfield Police Department’s Lt. Mike Lucas said in the press release, “He walked in here, heavily armed with body armor on, in military fatigues, and caused a great amount of panic inside the store… Obviously, what’s happened in Texas and Dayton and all that kind of stuff in the last seven days – that’s on everybody’s mind.”

On August 3, a gunman in an El Paso Walmart shot-and-killed 22 people and injured dozens more. Less than 24 hours later, in Dayton, Ohio, a gunman Connor Betts killed nine people, including his sister, Megan Betts, in a bar in the city.

Speaking to the media, Lucas said that Andreychenko, 20, is “lucky he’s still alive.” Lucas added that Andreychenko surrendered shortly after he arrived at the Walmart after he was confronted by a former firefighter. No shots were fired during the incident.

Lucas added that officers were called to the store after getting reports of an active shooter. When officers arrived at the scene, Lucas said people could be seen hiding outside in the parking lot. He described the scene as being “pretty chaotic.”
