PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - Police are searching for a man who allegedly went to a Florida Walmart and inquired about purchasing a weapon that would kill a lot of people.
The Port St. Lucie Police Department says that they need the public's help in identifying the subject of surveillance photos captured at a Walmart on U.S. Highway 1.
They say that the male subject in the photo approached a sales clerk at the Walmart on Wednesday night and inquired about purchasing a weapon that could kill large amounts of people.
He is said to be between 50 and 60 years of age and has gray, black hair. He also has a goatee, stands at about five-feet, eight-inches tall, and weighs between 200 and 220 pounds. He was wearing a black short sleeve polo shirt, light colored shorts, and a black watch on his left wrist.

(7,947 posts)DON'T SELL GUNS!
Seriously. The CEO made noises about maybe doing something important and meaningful to recognize what just happened at the El Paso Walmart, but seemed like he was excluding getting rid of guns in the stores.
Maybe after the two events today....
I cannot imagine-- even with a profit motive-- they'd make enough from gun sales to justify the bad press. What self-respecting MAGAt would buy his guns at Walmart anyway?

(19,233 posts)In rural areas, they're often the only place to get hunting guns and ammo. They'd lose a huge amount of profit by dropping firearms and ammo sales.
Besides which, they don't even sell assault rifles or handguns. It's all bolt-action deer rifles, lever-action cowboy rifles and 12-gauge shotguns. The guns they sell aren't the guns mass shooters use.

(22,990 posts)Phil Attey now admits the best way to make a point might not have been to ask a Walmart clerk Wednesday night if they could sell him a gun that would kill 200 people.
He insists he wasn't serious and that he's a gun violence prevention activist.

Police say they already talked with Attey, a one-time Florida resident who now lives in Washington DC.
"This is just me. This is the power of an individual, not an organization, not a political campaign, but just the power of an individual to stand up and say, No more, he said.
What he did sounds radical and careless but on the other hand, what if 100 activists went into every Walmart that sells guns and asked "do you sell guns that can rapidly kill lots of people?" That might get Walmart executive's attention.

(30,809 posts)In fact it is an important strategy, used throughout human evolution, to identify people who are threats.
The important thing in today's society is to be thoughtful about how we define our categories, and to also allow that they are a rough and imperfect tool.

(18,600 posts)Because the stereotype maybe reliably applied to virtually every member of the group.
Other stereotyping is not acceptable because it is simply a prejudicial judgment based on superficial factors that in no way take into account the individual being judged. In this case it is profiling/bigotry/racism.
The infallible way to determine which case applies is easy. If you agree with the speaker it is clearly the first case.

Part of that is staying out of Walmart. They will feel the drop in sales.

Would it have received so much new coverage if handled another way?
