Nogales Border Patrol agent pleads guilty to intentionally striking migrant with truck

Source: Arizona Daily Star

A Border Patrol agent in Nogales who called the people he apprehends “subhuman” pleaded guilty to striking a man with his agency truck while making an arrest.

Matthew Bowen admitted to intentionally striking a Guatemalan man with an unreasonable amount of force while arresting him for crossing the border illegally Dec. 3, 2017, in Nogales, according to documents filed in U.S. District Court in Tucson.

Bowen, 39, faces up to one year in prison after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of violating the civil rights of the man under color of law, according to an Aug. 8 plea agreement made public Monday.

Bowen was a 10-year veteran of the Border Patrol when he was placed on indefinite suspension without pay in June 2018 shortly after he was indicted. He will resign from the Border Patrol as part of his plea agreement.

If the migrant worker had struck the border agent, wouldn't the migrant worker have had the book thrown at him?

I think as a result of the government agent's action that the agent just pleaded guilty for, the migrant worker should be awarded citizenship as well as his family.

3. I know - why report on the 'maximum 1 year in jail' when it is irrelevant?

Running an innocent person down is only 1 year max, and no minimum?

5. Not saying what this jackass did was right (it wasn't) but per the article, he didn't run him over.

Lopez Aguilar tried to run, and Bowen drove up behind him in his truck, and "bumped" him once, then did it again and knocked him down. According to another agent's statement, he stopped the truck inches before running Lopez Aguilar over. After being detained, he was taken to hospital with abrasions to one hand and both knees. Bowen then lied in his written report about the incident, which is quite a surprise (that's sarcasm, just in case).

My guess is that he's getting the lowest possible charge because he's doing a plea deal, and because he's a law enforcement officer. It's definitely not right, but prosecutors do plea deals for lesser charges every day, and for all manner of crimes.

Sounds like a real 'big tough guy'. Car vs pedestrian is commonly considered a type of lethal use of a car. the article does not say he is going to definitely serve the one year. That chickenshit agent then filed a false report indicating that he was not sure if the truck hit the defenseless individual, a lie that was also included in his indictment - the idiot probably thought no one was going to see the video.
