Several injured as officers pepper-spray protesters outside ICE facility in Rhode Island
Source: ABC News
Chaos broke out at the protest of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Rhode Island late Wednesday when a truck tried to drive through protesters and corrections officers ended up pepper-spraying the crowd.
The protest outside the Wyatt Detention Center in Central Falls, Rhode Island, less than 10 miles north of Providence, was led by members of the "Never Again" movement, which likens undocumented immigrants being imprisoned to the treatment of Jews during the Holocaust. Protesters have been organizing outside the ICE facility since early July.
About a dozen people were treated for irritation due to the pepper spray Wednesday, while one person was taken to the hospital for a minor injury, Providence ABC affiliate WLNE reported.
Protesters surrounded the pick-up truck as it left the facility, with at least one person jumping on the back, before the group refused to move. They could be heard chanting, "The whole world is watching," as officers repeatedly asked them to move back. After about 45 seconds, at least one corrections officer is seen unleashing a large cloud of pepper spray -- sending the dozens of protesters scattering.

(10,035 posts)I'm of the opinion that self-defense against such an act (pepper-spraying) would be justified.

(39,171 posts)which is the legal term for law enforcement officer. Given that they were on duty and the incident took place at the facility, I suspect their actions were legal.

(10,035 posts)What facility is this? Who are the officers employed by? US BoP officers have powers of arrest but they are limited in scope and jurisdiction. They can arrest for any violation on BoP property. They can only arrest off of BoP property for violations relating to escape or assault on a BoP "officer". The sidewalk is a public space and "The person driving the truck was not an ICE employee".

(39,171 posts)in any case, the state police are investigating.

(39,171 posts)they are not a rounded up and riled posse. They are trained and certified by the state. They have specialized crowd control units.

(41,742 posts)Fuck your question.
2017 - lol

(3,123 posts)Is surrounding a person's truck and jumping on the tailgate being an accessory to such?
Is it EVER justified to physically block a street or sidewalk?
Both sides can easily be assholes. You don't have to approve of what ICE is doing to think that anyone standing in front of and blocking a vehicle is pretty fucking stupid. I know I'd probably panic and go either forward or in reverse if I was swarmed. No one, ever, has the right to swarm around a vehicle like that. And what the fuck does 2017 have to do with anything, as if I care about your answer or opinion?
Same thing goes with anti abortion fucks, blocking people. You have a right to protest, you don't have a right to block peoples movement. not that running people over is a good thing, but someone standing in front of a fucking moving vehicle blocking it isn't anything noble, it's being Darwinbait.
I would have dearly loved to drive right over those anti-abortion assholes trying to block Planned Parenthood.
