JERUSALEM -- A day after Israel announced it was banning Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) from entering for a four-day trip to the Palestinian territories, the country's Interior Minister Aryeh Deri said Friday he would approve a humanitarian request from Tlaib to visit her 90-year-old grandmother who lives in the occupied West Bank.
"I would like to request admittance to Israel in order to visit my relatives, and specifically my grandmother who is in her 90s and lives in Beit Ur al-Fouqa," Tlaib wrote in a letter to the Israeli minister. "This would be my last opportunity to see her. I will respect any restrictions and will not promote boycotts against Israel during my visit."
A statement from Deri's office said he would approve her request. He also expressed hope she would stand by her commitment and that "the visit would indeed be for humanitarian purposes only." Tlaib is expected to arrive in Israel next week.
On Thursday, Israel said it would not allow Tlaib and Omar to enter the country this coming Sunday for a trip focused mainly on viewing the impact of recent U.S. policies and aid cuts on the Palestinians. Israel's decision immediately drew widespread criticism from Democratic lawmakers and American-Jewish organizations, including the staunchly pro-Israel lobby AIPAC, with some saying it set a new precedent for U.S.-Israel relations.

Israel's Interior Minister Aryeh Deri said Friday he would approve an overnight humanitarian request from Tlaib.
The decision comes a day after Israel announced it would prohibit Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Tlaib (D-Mich.) from entering for a four-day trip to the Palestinian territories scheduled to start on Sunday. It followed a rare intervention from President Trump, who urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Twitter to bar the lawmakers.

JERUSALEM -- A day after Israel, egged on by President Trump, refused entry to two members of Congress, the Israeli government said on Friday that it would allow one of the lawmakers, Representative Rashida Tlaib, to enter on humanitarian grounds so that she could see her 90-year-old grandmother, who lives in the occupied West Bank.
The government on Thursday denied entry to Ms. Tlaib and Representative Ilhan Omar, the first Muslim women in Congress, because they have supported the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel.
President Trump tweeted earlier Thursday that "it would show great weakness if Israel" allowed the two women to enter.

(15,237 posts)Now Israel can join in on Americas shame. At least they slightly relented something Trump would never do. Do they understand in Israel that the Trump administration cages and kills men, women and children? Can Israelis recognize heartless and cruel sick regime a bizarre heartless and cruel dictator? This is what you must deal with when you make a deal with the devil.

Not exactly sure why she did that YESTERDAY and then said she would not go today.
Why wouldn't she go see her grandmother and then come back and talk about what she saw?
It may not be popular to say on DU but this is very distracting and not being handled/managed very well.

(33,120 posts)I also believe a stronger statement from Pelosi and the other visiting Democratic Representatives is in order.
Mentioning a close examination of the diplomatic relationship between the Israeli Government and the US and how partisan it has become.

Israel had said Tlaib could visit relatives in the West Bank on humanitarian grounds. But then the Interior Ministry released a letter purportedly signed by Tlaib in which she promised not to advocate boycotts during her visit. That appears to have led to her decision to cancel the visit.
Visiting my grandmother under these oppressive conditions meant to humiliate me would break my grandmothers heart, she said in a statement. Silencing me with treatment to make me feel less-than is not what she wants for me it would kill a piece of me that always stands up against racism and injustice.
