Joe Kennedy confirms reports he's considering a Senate run
Source: Washington Examiner
Democratic Rep. Joe Kennedy, 38, confirmed reports that he is considering running for Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey's seat in 2020.
Kennedy, who's been the congressman for Massachusetts' 4th Congressional District since 2013, has seen local support for a potential Senate run in recent weeks.
"Over the past few weeks I've begun to consider a run for the U.S. Senate. This isn't a decision I'm approaching lightly and -- to be completely candid -- I wasn't expecting to share my thoughts so soon," he wrote on Facebook Monday morning.
He went on, "I hear the folks who say I should wait my turn, but with due respect -- I'm not sure this is a moment for waiting. Our system has been letting down a lot of people for a long time, and we can't fix it if we don't challenge it. I've got some ideas on how to do that. And I dont think our democratic process promises anyone a turn."

(7,430 posts)that is so unique and transformative in the Kennedy tradition. Not yet, anyway. IMO, he needs more time to craft his public image and his public persona.
OTOH, a Kennedy in the Senate sends chills up my spine. I remember the Nixon-Kennedy debates. I saw the magic early on. I want Joe to rise to the top. Maybe he can learn on the fly. I hope he makes the best decision for himself, his family, his state, and the country.

(747 posts)Edward John Markey (born July 11, 1946) is an American politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Massachusetts since 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the U.S. Representative for Massachusetts's 7th congressional district from 1976 to 2013. Between the House and Senate, Markey has served in Congress for more than four decades. He was also a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1973 to 1976.
Markey has focused on energy policy and was Chairman of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming from 2007 to 2011. In 2013, after John Kerry was appointed United States Secretary of State, he was elected to serve out the balance of Kerry's sixth Senate term in a 2013 special election. Markey defeated Stephen Lynch in the Democratic primary and Republican Gabriel E. Gomez in the general election. When he left the House, he was its eighth most senior member. In 2014, Markey was elected to a full six-year term in the Senate. He is the dean of the Massachusetts congressional delegation and the second longest-serving current member of Congress from New England, behind Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont.

Not cherry picking like some people.

(7,596 posts)I do know people of his generation seem a lot less willing to retire and "pass the torch" than ones before them did.
That's fine. That's their right. It's also the right of ambitious young people who don't feel like waiting around forever to challenge them.

(6,423 posts)Holding on too long, that's helpful in arguing for term limits, all the $ spent on getting elected is ridiculous, they get held to donor demands or at least struggle with it, and then spend way too much time on re-election.

(7,596 posts)As far as waiting "his turn" is concerned, you have Biden and Sanders running for president when they're almost 80 freaking years old. Seems like their "turn" should have ended awhile ago. It works both ways.

(561 posts)I think he would have made a very good candidate. But going after Senator Markey' seat, I think, is a really bad idea. Guess we'll see how it turns out.
