Obama introduces new initiative in fight against gerrymandering
Source: The Hill
Former President Obama on Monday announced a new initiative in a campaign to combat partisan gerrymandering.
"Training is at the heart of organizing. Its why Ive always made it a priority from my 2008 campaign until now," Obama said in a tweet announcing Redistricting U, part of the All on the Line campaign.
Redistricting U will send trainers throughout the country to offer free, in-person instruction and help to volunteers involved in the redistricting process in states.
According to the campaign's website, the initiative is being pushed to empower individuals to "be leaders in the movement for fair maps."

(128,884 posts)They appear to be doing the same formula that Indivisible used - I.e., "training". Showing people the process (including any paperwork requirements, etc).
Of course when it comes to redistricting, in most cases at this point, whoever controls the state legislatures controls the process, although some states have started implementing various "fair districting" type processes, including having 3rd party/bipartisan/non-partisan boards decide, etc.

Republicans are trying to undo the New Deal, we need to take back our democracy before it's a dictatorship!

(2,227 posts)Wasn't this supposed to be Obama's and Holder's signature cause after 2016's election? What happened? It is now almost 4 years later....
I know the Supremes have pretty much said that the states can discriminate as they damn well please, since, you know, STATES RIGHTS and all...
But there were several lawsuits based on state constitutions that were won. We need to file one of those in every state that has obviously gerrymandered districts.
Lawsuits at the state level are the answer.
Training can't do shit about a rigged election.
I think Obama is the best president we have ever had. But at this point I think that he has, taking the "honorable" tact, sat on the sidelines for far too long. He needs to get off his ass and do something.
