Queen approves Boris Johnson request to suspend parliament

Source: Independent UK

Opponents of a no-deal Brexit have accused Boris Johnson of a “coup” against parliament, after it was announced that both the Commons and Lords will be suspended for more than a month in the run-up to the date of EU withdrawal.

The Queen approved an order from the prime minister for parliament to be “prorogued” from the second week in September until 14 October - just 17 days before the scheduled date of Brexit on Halloween.

Approval was given at a session of the Privy Council in Balmoral despite letters from Jeremy Corbyn and Jo Swinson requesting urgent meetings with the Queen to urge her to withhold it.

Commons Speaker John Bercow denounced the suspension of sittings - due to begin between 9 and 12 September - as a "constitutional outrage", while former chancellor Philip Hammond described it as "profoundly undemocratic".

But I think you won't have a lot of buy in from your fellow subjects.

Me, I don't care what the UK and its commonwealth does wrt to the royal family.

Royalty is a tourist attraction. If a nation wants to keep some paid actors around to play fake government to bring in the tourists, I couldn't imagine caring.

She didn't consult with the Speaker of the Commons, or the Leader of the Opposition. She has admitted she is a waster of space, constitutionally.

Down with the monarchy.

The point is to look interesting but not do anything substantive. The last time the monarchy actually intervened in politics there was significant blowback.

England without royalty would not be the same. Even though there are some people who oppose it, by large numbers the British people love and support their royalty.

It's kind of amazing the number of supposed progressives who mock and deride the traditions of other countries with knee jerk reactions. It's pretty intellectually lazy, tbh.

11. Ruth Davidson expected to quit as Scottish Tory leader

Ruth Davidson is expected to quit as leader of the Scottish Conservative party because of her irreconcilable differences with Boris Johnson over Brexit and the pressures of motherhood.

Scottish Tory sources said an announcement was imminent. Davidson was “considering her position”, one source added, although he stressed it was not connected to Johnson’s decision to prorogue parliament.

“Ruth will make her decision clear in due course, and there will be no further comment this evening,” her spokesman said.
...
One of Johnson’s first acts as prime minister was to sack her close friend and ally David Mundell, who served as Scottish secretary for five years.

She was their hope, once, as the 'sane' Tory. They've run too far to the right for her.

Formal name given to the period of the end of one session of the UK Parliament to the opening of the next session.

Usually only a couple of days. The power to do this belongs to the Monarch and is not usually turned down if requested by the prime minister

It shows how everyone else is losing.

Putin wanted this. He got it. The EU is now weaker.

I guess he'll hammer on NATO some more next.
