Brexit: John Bercow to step down as Speaker by 31 October - live news

Source: The Guardian

John Bercow, the Speaker, says he wants to make a personal statement.

At the 2017 election he promised his wife and children that it would be his last, he says.

He says if the Commons votes for an early general election, his tenure as Speaker and as an MP will end when this parliament ends.

He says, if MPs do not vote for an election, he has concluded the least disruptive and most disruptive option will stand down at close of play on Thursday 31 October.

I like him a lot! I enjoy listening to his calls for order and his humorous scolding and rebukes.

Just checked into hotel in Bury St Edmunds and turned the TV to hear that Boris is suspending Parliment, then they cut into sports coverage to cover the live speech.

in the UK. One night in London when we were walking by Parliament, we noticed that a late sitting of the House of Commons was open to the public. The only line involved the time it took to get through security, so we couldn't resist. Even though the meeting was devoted to relatively mundane matters, it was lively and interesting... but what added to the coolness factor was that after that visit, we kept seeing Bercow and Parliament all over the news because we were in the UK during the very public investigations into the "News of the World" phone hacking scandal. That visit was right at the beginning of our trip, so the kids had a personal reference point when they saw Bercow, Parliament and the House debates on TV, and it made it all a bit more relevant and meaningful. Bercow was quite a character even when engaged in noncontroversial activities, and it seems like the end of an era.
