Arson at 3 Catholic churches serving Hispanics in El Paso probed by FBI, reward set

Source: nbc

“We are counting on assistance from members of the community to keep our city safe,” the FBI said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is offering rewards of up to $15,000 in the search for culprits in arson attacks at three Catholic churches in El Paso that largely serve Hispanics and migrants.

The first blaze was set outside the St. Matthew Catholic Church on May 7. Exactly a week later, incendiary devices were thrown at St. Patrick Cathedral, a spokesman for the Diocese of El Paso previously told NBC News.

Then, on June 15, firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from the main sanctuary of St. Jude Catholic Church. They found a broken window near the chapel’s altar.

“We are counting on assistance from members of the community to keep our city safe,” the FBI said in a press release Thursday announcing rewards of $5,000 for information on each arson attack, or $15,000 for all three.

For all its complexities and failings in other areas, the official Catholic Church (the names above presumably excepted) has been very consistently pro-immigrant, and in the US, especially sensitive to the problems of Hispanic immigrants.

some Catholics.

But there are millions of Catholics who reject the Church's position on contraception and abortion.

This city voted 80% for Hillary. The only reason Trump bothered coming here was to foment violence and cause fear. It's easy to see that a man of no character at all is stupid enough to believe that we will cower in fear. When we say El Paso Strong we mean it. Catholic churches here issue t-shirts that say "No Human Is Illegal" among other things.
The people in this city are the best, if not the richest. Strangers wave, teenagers help old ladies off and on buses, hold the door for other people, and you don't just do business-you make friend. We are stronger and happier than that pathetic loser will ever be.

White Catholics now align more with the right wing. There are very few white liberals left in the church.

There are plenty of white liberals left in the Church. Just not as many as there should be.

(And there are plenty of hispanic anti-abortion Catholics as well)
