Scalise raises concerns about politically motivated impeachments
Source: ABC News
House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel defended the Democrats' handling of the impeachment inquiry, calling the president's actions on Ukraine "essentially" a bribe, while Republican Whip Steve Scalise said the inquiry is nothing like what Presidents Bill Clinton or Richard Nixon faced.
"Let's look at what he's done, no other president in American history has done something like that," Engel, D-N.Y., said on ABC's "This Week" Sunday. "He tried to essentially bribe a foreign power to interfere in U.S. elections."
Scalise, R-La., insisted in a separate interview with ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos that the July phone call between President Donald Trump and the president of Ukraine was not about the 2020 election or investigating political opponents.
"That's not what was happening on the phone call," Scalise said. "Even when the president said, 'will you do me a favor,' he went on to ask about CrowdStrike. That wasn't about Joe Biden." "It wasn't about a political opponent, it was about corruption that happened prior," he said, adding that Trump's asking China to investigate Biden later was "rhetorical" and an effort "to get the press riled up."

(599 posts)If Trump were held to that standard, he could have been impeached on day one, and every day since.

(21,859 posts)determining if impeachment is warranted or not. If the president's a crook (and he is by any normal standard in the real world, republicans be damned for sidestepping the issue and trying to obscure the truth). I guarantee you that Scalise is extremely biased so listening to him and his out of left field explanation / feeble attempts to sidestep the impeachment process is a farce.
Lock him up.

That's all the corrupt Rs want.

(12,539 posts)Trump asked the Ukrainian president not only to open an investigation into the Bidens (which had already been done and debunked) he also demanded - and this is vitally important - that the president make a public statement that he had done so.
Let the GOP yell all they want. Trump is going to be the first president of the 21st century to be impeached and tried. And when it's complete - no matter the result - that will be a real fact that will be included in every history book and biography.

"When the law is against you, argue the facts".
"When both the facts and law are against you, pound the table".

(397 posts)Trump was not offering money to gain a result from the Ukrainian government.
The money had been granted already and was theirs. Trump intercepted the money, not allowing them to have it until they had granted his wishes.
That is not bribery. It is extortion. He was literally removing Ukraines ability to protect itself against an invading force, until they did his bidding
