Democratic Strategists Set Up $75 Million Digital Campaign to Counter Trump

Source: New York Times

A progressive organization is plunging itself into the presidential campaign, unveiling plans to spend $75 million on digital advertising to counter President Trump’s early spending advantage in key 2020 battleground states. The effort, by a nonprofit group called Acronym and an affiliated political action committee, is an outgrowth of growing concern by some Democratic officials that Mr. Trump could build an insurmountable edge in those key states through massive early advertising efforts.

Mr. Trump has spent more than $26 million so far nationally just on Facebook and Google, more than the four top-polling Democrats — Joseph R. Biden Jr., Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg — have spent in total on those platforms. “The gun on this general election does not start when we have a nominee; it started months ago,” said David Plouffe, who managed Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign and was a key adviser to him in 2012, and who recently joined Acronym’s board. ”If the things that need to happen don’t happen in these battleground states between now and May or June, our nominee will never have time to catch up.“

In an interview, Mr. Plouffe and Tara McGowan, the founder and chief executive of Acronym, said their digital campaign would kick off immediately with a heavy focus on shaping how the public views Mr. Trump and the Democratic Party during the primary season, well before a nominee emerges. “Our nominee is going to be broke, tired, have to pull together the party and turn around on a dime and run a completely different race for a completely different audience,” Mr. Plouffe said. “There is an enormous amount of danger between now and then,” he added. “If the hole is too steep to dig out of, they’re not going to win.”

The campaign, which the organization is calling “Four is Enough,” will focus initially on key swing states: Arizona, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. One state that is historically a battleground was notably missing from the initial list: Florida. The effort will feature advertisements across multiple digital platforms, including Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Hulu and Pandora. There will be original content, such as videos and animations, as well as boosting local news coverage that portrays Mr. Trump, his administration and his agenda in a harsh light.

You know, Penzey's, just one little spice company, made their presence known on these platforms and committed to promoting the cause of liberals and progressives. This effort needed to happen post haste. Spending who knows how much to send me ("the choir" ) a million pieces of snail mail -sometimes 2 or 3 pieces per day is, IMHO ridiculous, where that money could be better utilized to hit the internet where even my demographic (boomers) resides.

mail. It is a waste of money. I have even stopped donating over the internet because I immediately start getting MAIL.
I will donate directly to campaigns when I know that I will receive emails only.

yet months later they tell me to "renew membership".

I think there is a big disconnect in their financial/fund-raising operation that is perhaps sadly a generational one.

They recently started using ActBlue (which is how I was originally using to donate to candidates) but then using them to "renew membership" was still disconnected from whatever "records" they have.

I know that not everyone in the U.S. is on the internet - notably people who may be in rural areas and/or are stuck with dial-up with maybe some cell access. And I don't know if the printing and mailing of these pieces of paper (and I get dozens of "surveys" every month) are something being contracted to small businesses associated with the party to give them some work, thus the reason why they continue to do this. But the frequency needs to be cut in half, if not more, and then funnel that money onto those social media platforms or even TV and radio (Steyer shouldn't be the only one I see with ads from Democrats promoting policies).... And they can even funnel some to discussion forums like DU. I don't know how many posts I've seen from people here on DU complaining about all the RW ads and other nonsense that gets cycled through the ad server here.

when Obama was running, I ended up on all kinds of their lists. And then recently (I think due to ActBlue), I ended up on all kinds of email lists for candidates fundraising across the country. Had to unsub from a big pile. I get that many who were elected in the 2018 election, did so thanks to "out of state" donations, but we have a pile of new ones here in PA that need the support too.

Now that I'm retired, my funds are nowhere near what they were back then so I just don't have it anymore.

Hubbie and I have several of Penzey’s spices in our collection. They are great! And their packaging was certainly promoting progressive thinking!
