Democrats take control of Virginia House and Senate for first time in more than two decades

Source: Richmond Times-Dispatch

Fueled by President Donald Trump’s unpopularity, Virginia voters on Tuesday handed control of the state’s General Assembly to Democrats, setting up Virginia's most progressive legislature in modern times.

The Associated Press called the state Senate and House of Delegates as flipping to the Democrats.

Democrats have not held both the state House and Senate and the governor’s mansion in 26 years, and Tuesday’s results appear to give the party the power to pass its agenda and allow Gov. Ralph Northam to sign his party’s bills into law.

“Tonight, the ground has shifted in Virginia government," Northam said in a statement. "The voters have spoken, and they have elected landmark Democratic majorities in both the Senate and the House of Delegates. I am proud of my fellow Democrats and inspired by our shared victory.

Great news for the rest of the country that helped elect Democrats today. People are tired of Trump's bullshit.

Here's a link from CBS news: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/virginia-election-results-today-race-2019-11-05-live-updates/

"Democrats on Tuesday erased the razor-thin majorities Republicans held in the State Capitol and now hold all three branches of government in Virginia for the first time in a generation.

The elections in Virginia received nationwide attention and visits from national politicians including Vice President Mike Pence and former Vice President Joe Biden, because of the signal it could send about how the parties should message, especially in the suburbs, ahead of 2020.

The Democrats went into Election Day hoping to build off of their performance in the state in 2017, and the party's performance nationwide in 2018. In 2017, Democrats flipped 15 seats in the House and reelected Democratic Governor Ralph Northam."

VA Governors can only do a single term. They can run again after being out of office, but cannot serve consecutive terms. This is Northam's first (most likely ONLY) term.

the partisan gerry-mander. I wouldn't expect Dems to do their own partisan gerry-mander, but to set up fairly drawn, compact districts both statewide and Congressional. Like in my state, that will likely result in Congressional reps that reflect the actual make up of the electorate, i.e. more Dem elected representatives.

Team effort all around, and long overdue after three fucking recounts and a literal flip of a coin cost us control in Richmond two years ago...
