Sondland was not empowered to do the things the Russian claims. It is my understanding that Sondland's interference in this issue is what is the unasked question.

They got the message. They agreed to do a CNN spot. Proof the message was received. The whistleblower reported the violations. End of CNN spot. The pressure was off TRUMP WAS CAUGHT thanks to the whistleblower.

So now today. After the Trump toadies kept pointing out HOW CORRUPT Ukraine administrations have been. Someone send a spokesperson with a title to say they didn't get the message from Sondland.
