Hong Kong university under siege by police as authorities warn live rounds are an option
Source: CNN
Hong Kong (CNN)Hong Kong police fired water cannons and tear gas at protesters in the streets surrounding a central university Sunday, hours after a police officer was shot with an arrow during a siege of the fortified campus.
In a new escalation after nearly six months of demonstrations in the fiercely divided city, police warned via Facebook that if protesters continued to use petrol bombs and bow and arrows, they would respond by using minimum force and, given no other choice, live rounds.
Earlier in the evening, police had told protesters to leave the area and stop all illegal assemblies as they were "planning for the next round of operation."
Hundreds of protesters with bricks, petrol bombs and makeshift barricades had held off riot police on roads surrounding the campus in the city's Hung Hom district, just across Victoria Harbor from Hong Kong Island, for hours.

(10,667 posts)HONG KONG Police stormed a university campus held by anti-government protesters early Monday, making mass arrests and threatening to meet further resistance with live fire a stunning new escalation in the now-six-month struggle for democracy that has moved in recent days to this territorys campuses.
The demonstrators, who spent Sunday countering police water cannons of stinging blue dye with petrol bombs, had held their ground into early Monday morning local time. But just before daybreak, officers from a special tactical unit entered the campus and made dozens of arrests, according to local news reporters at the site. A live feed showed a university entrance engulfed in flames.
The confrontation showed how many young protesters have followed a steady path of radicalization as the movement presses forward with significant public support. Although police insist on ending the protests and neutralizing their core of frontliners, it grows increasingly unclear where the unrest will lead, how it will end and whether the damage can be undone.

(24,324 posts)#1-- demonstrations in the fiercely divided city,
The city is NOT fiercely divided--- fuck WaPo on this.. Something like 90% of HKers support the protests. It's Lam under the thumb of Xi and the communist party that is causing the trouble.
2- "protesters have followed a steady path of radicalization" blah blah --- it has been basically a peaceful protest for months..they are defending themselves... Xi will NEVER let them have anything..NOT TO SAY there haven't been violent events... but at least one of the HK "TRIAD" gangs is being paid by either Lam or the chinese government to foment violence.. They will do whatever for whomever pays them..
3- the PLA is on the ground in HK-- probably part of the 'special tactical unit' ----PEOPLE'S LIBERATION ARMY my ass...
For what it is worth THIS is what the facsists in the usa will bring if wee don;t beat them to a pulp right now...
