Alabama Supreme Court upholds Confederate monument law
Source: AL.com
The Alabama Supreme Court today ruled that the city of Birmingham violated Alabamas monument protection law when it placed a plywood screen around a Confederate monument in Linn Park in August 2017.
In a 9-0 decision, the justices reversed a lower court ruling in favor of the city. The Supreme Court sent the case back to circuit court with instructions to enter an order that the city broke the law and must pay a $25,000 fine.
The Legislature passed the Alabama Memorial Preservation Act in 2017 in response to removals and calls for removal of Confederate monuments on public property.
The law prohibits local governments from moving, altering, renaming, or otherwise disturbing monuments that have been in place 40 years or more.

(36 posts)That the people with power in the state of Alabama, love to hang onto and cherish, losing. So much so that they are willing to make sure that nothing happens to their monuments proclaiming their complete humiliation because they chose to fight to remain a slave state and want to forever be remembered as one of those states who actually believe that all men are NOT created equal.
They long for those good old days when whites owned and controlled everything. I am left to wonder how their state university's football team would fare without integration and the civil rights act? Hypocrites much?

Great article of the game that sarcastically has been said did more to integrate the South than Martin Luther King

(1,555 posts)Great idea! Let's build monuments to General Sherman along the route from Atlanta to Savannah. We could have celebrations with bands and fireworks every November 15th!

(711 posts)Birmingham has been through so much. This is an African American city, the most progressive place in the state. It's so depressing. I know it's wrong, but I'd love to see some sledge hammers and spray paint cans Monday morning. Is this post against the rules? That's an honest question. If so, I'll edit it.
