Here's what to know about the tornadoes that killed 23 in Tennessee

Source: Channel 5 TV, Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Twenty-three Tennesseans were killed after severe storms and tornadoes ripped through the state overnight. At 5 a.m., TEMA declared a level three State of Emergency. The National Weather Service said an EF-3 tornado hit the Five Points area of East Nashville.

DAVIDSON COUNTY (Nashville area): Two people in East Nashville were killed and at least 156 others in the county have been treated. More than 50,000 people woke up Tuesday without power. The Five Points area was severely damaged in the storm. Metro Nashville Schools will be closed on March 3.

PUTNAM COUNTY (Cookeville area): Seventeen people in total were killed in the county. The sheriff's office said the tornado hit between the city limits of Cookeville and Baxter. Sheriff Eddie Farris said several homes have been flattened.

WILSON COUNTY (Lebanon area): Three people were killed in Wilson County. Officials said one of victims suffered a medical emergency at the time of the tornado. Wilson County Schools will be closed for the remainder of the week. The sheriff's office said damage is too extensive to list specific roads and businesses that have been affected.

I was taken on a tour of the Calf Killer valley as a teenager. Gorgeous countryside.

I’ve seen the terror and devastation of tornadoes first hand. Am saddened for the loss of life, and what the survivors will go through in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

Rebuilding and healing can happen - even when it doesn’t feel possible at first.

Please relay any information about a good local relief organization, and I’ll contribute what I can beyond what I have given to the Red Cross.

Would like to hear from TN DUers as well.

“We know when disasters strike, there are no quick fixes,” said Ellen Lehman, president of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. “We need to support the affected communities and the nonprofits on the ground helping victims and addressing their needs.

I did make a contribution to the CFMT. My cousins are okay, whew.

Hope all is well for your friends and family as I keep those effected in my thoughts (and giving budget). Am mindful of volunteering for relief efforts a little early this year.

We here in Dayton Ohio had major tornado the end of May...hit at Midnight..., F4 hit my neighbor Hood.....20 miles of damage, destruction and 1/2 mile wide... Amazing, only 1 death....the trauma still remains. My heart and prayers go out to Tennessee.

a couple times a week for years. I lived near Memphis for a spell as a youngster, it's beautiful territory. One of my favorite routes for fall foliage and spring blooms.

Sad that so much loss and damage has come.

after graduating from Tech in 1970 (BS-EE), lived in Nashville for a while then moved to KY for work. I've always loved Nashville for its laid-back atmosphere and music scene. Some of my fondest memories of childhood was Christmas shopping at Harveys and getting Crystal burgers once a year at that time.

I graduated from Tech in 1988. Cooke-vegas has grown a lot since then. Nashville has too. Gentrification in places I never expected. Still have some family there, but I haven't lived in the metro area since the late 90's.

We're about 90 miles north of Nashville in Kentucky. We had a horrendous thunderstorm go through from about 8:30 to 10:30 (lightening hit the phone lines). Couple tornadoes in the counties just south of us.

I used to walk a few blocks to the many clubs and bars there. They were very lucky the tornado didn't strike on a weekend night or there would have been far more casualties.
