The pro-Israel lobbying group said in an updated statement to attendees, speakers, administration and Capitol Hill offices on Friday that the two individuals affected traveled from New York to Washington, D.C. to attend the March 1-3 conference.
More than 18,000 people attended the conference.
Attendees and speakers at the conference included Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., former 2020 Democratic candidate Mike Bloomberg, former candidate Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and several other lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle.

(21,337 posts)750 years ago during the bubonic plague. But they had an excuse. It was the Middle Ages. Didn't know any better.
And yet, here we are, centuries later. People thought the world would end 1000 years ago at the turn of the millennium. Yet we lived on into the next millennium.
You'd think they would catch on after a while.

(21,337 posts)about that the other day. What would rhe world be like then? How primitive our technology would seem in 1000 years.
I could not even imagine what the world would look like or what society would be like. Not any more than someone in Europe 1000 years ago could imagine unknown lands and people around the world, or flying across oceans.
But I do think that, in 1000 years, people will not be expecting the end of the world, at least not in a religious rapture. There might be circumstsnces threatening the life of the planet, but by then, there might be colonies in space. Who knows?

(9,988 posts)I'm only 50 but in my childhood and teens I've talked with people who lived before cars were common, who didn't have a telephone until they were well into adulthood, who never even SAW a computer, much less owned one.
But technology only changes people so much. We're a dramatic species, and communication tech will never fully eliminate weird superstitions and apocalypse theories, it'll just spread them faster.

(21,337 posts)say that today's science fiction is tomorrow's reality. He was born in 1922 in an area so rural that he remembered when they got electricity on his farm. Said his teachers talked about a day when there would be "radio programs" that you could SEE, right in your home. TV, of course.
I remember teachers saying we would be able to see people on our phones while talking to them. Sort of true today, but on laptops, not phones.
As for basic human nature, I agree that it mostly remains the same throughout tech changes. That's why we can relate to ancient literature, like Greek and Roman epics.
But, an anthrpology prof told us that we have reached a point when evolution is more influenced by culture and technology than by natural environment. Who lives to pass on genes and what those genes are like are affected by developments in medicine, changes in habitats and resources due to human behavior, etc. Over the generations, these factors affect brain development and patterns of thinking. Small changes in each generation leading to larger differences between us today and future generations centuries from now. Of course, none of us today will be around to see if he was right.
But, it is true, as you said, that subjective perceptions and beliefs about life, values, and cosmology, expressed in religions, have remained part of human life, taking various forms across time and geography. They are influenced by experiences and technology, too. So in the distant future, belief in end times rapture might be replaced by a different set of beliefs.

(21,337 posts)Bad times create fear of worse. Some fear is more realistic and some is imaginary or exaggerated.
In the 1950's, when Cold War fears dominated and space exploration was developing, monster movies were very popular, along with films about destruction of tge earth by alien invaders or nuclear war. People built bomb shelters and stocked them with food, water, and arms to fight off other survivors who might threaten to take over their safe place and supplies.

(21,337 posts)They have meetings with Trump, individually, and in groups.
What are the chances that any of them touched Trump after being exposed? Shook his hand? Patted his back or arm? Handed him a paper to read or sign? Touched his desk?
If all or even some of these government figures became ill, it would be 4 to 6 weeks before they recovered enough to do their jobs. What happens to government in the meantime? It still has to function.
What if both Pence and Trump were ill at the same time? Would Pelosi take over for 6 weeks?
EndlessWire
(6,455 posts)Could be a way out for us. Think of all she could get done in six weeks. Hate to say it (no, not really,) but I am praying for this to happen. Leave the government in President Pelosi's hands. With a little bit of enthusiasm, we could keep them all sick for 8 months.
wnylib
(21,337 posts)LOL. If only.
Even with just 6 or 8 weeks, they could be the most interesting weeks this nation has ever had.
I try not to wish illness on anyone, tempting as it is, simply because I don't want to become that kind of person. But it does cross my mind that, if it did happen, there would be some interesting and probably contentious consequences. R's would strongly object to Pelosi. The constitution calls for the Speaker of the House to take the presidency if we lose both the president and VP, but in the case of a temporary loss due to illness, there could be a fight over it.
A couple other scary thoughts occur to me. All of our top government people and candidates are in the most vulnerable age category. Not just Trump and maybe Pence, but Biden, Sanders, Pelosi, and various Senators and House members. And what if some zealous, exposed person who should be in voluntary quarantine deliberately tries to spread it to selected people?

(11,686 posts)My first thought was that our dictator is already an unhealthy person so we should have pence stay in close quarters with him and hope for the best ( him getting it ) or the worst ( him getting it. ).
Then again that might not be good because he would still hold his rallies claiming he is not sick.
i wonder why "pray-it-away-Pence" didn't get a message from God not to attend the conference?
