Cuomo: National Guard Sent To New Rochelle To Help With Coronavirus Outbreak

Source: WCBS radio

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced the National Guard will be deployed to New Rochelle to help deal with the coronavirus outbreak.

The governor made the announcement in Albany while confirming the state had reached a total of 173 positive cases of the virus.

He notes that New Rochelle, where the first positive case was confirmed in the state, is the most impacted by the outbreak with a total of 108 cases. Many of the cases can be linked to the 50-year-old attorney.

To help contain the spread of the outbreak in the area, Cuomo said there will be a 1-mile containment zone in New Rochelle. The National Guard will be deployed to that area to deliver food and assist in cleaning surfaces.

Live updates: Cuomo orders coronavirus containment zone in New York; major colleges close classrooms as virus spreads

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) on Tuesday announced schools and places of worship within a one-mile zone of the city of New Rochelle will close their doors for 14 days, and National Guard troops will help deliver food and disinfect common areas inside the zone.

As the outbreak of the novel coronavirus grows in the U.S., several major colleges like American University and the Ohio State University are shuttering classrooms and moving coursework online through the end of the month at least. There are more than 750 reported cases of covid-19, which has been detected in more than 30 states, prompting many to declare states of emergency.

. . .because it is NOT as drastic as it seems.

https://www.lohud.com/story/news/2020/03/10/coronavirus-cuomo-orders-new-rochelle-containment-area/5011068002/

(snip)

Any large gathering places within that containment area will be required to shut down from Thursday through March 25, Cuomo said.

(snip)
In other words, schools, places of worship, catering halls, etc.
(snip)
That includes several of New Rochelle's public schools; Those that fall within the containment zone will remain shut down for two weeks.

(snip)
Cuomo said residents who live within the containment area will be free to leave their homes and the area so long as they have not otherwise been ordered to quarantine.

The state's order will not apply to grocery stores, which will be allowed to remain open, he said.

(snip)

Again,THIS SHUTDOWN ONLY APPLIES TO LARGE GATHERING PLACES IN THE DESIGNATED AREA.

Public health and safety must head off this pandemic. It is far cheaper to do quarantines than to deny reality and let it spread, not to mention human suffering and loss of life.
