Headline: Trump clarifies comments on Europe travel after initially saying restrictions applied to cargo, not just people
WASHINGTON Minutes after addressing the nation about the coronavirus pandemic, President Donald Trump had to clean up his remarks Wednesday to clarify that he was not proposing a ban on cargo from Europe
The president outlined strict travel restrictions on passengers arriving in the United States from hard-hit portions of Europe during his Oval Office remarks.
"And these prohibitions will not only apply to the tremendous amount of trade and cargo but various other things as we get approval, Trump said. Anything coming from Europe to the United States is what we are discussing.
But while the Trump administration has sought to limit European imports as part of his trade policy, cargo has never been on the table as a way to control the spread of coronavirus. Cargo from China continued, for instance, even as it became clear that country was at the epicenter of the virus.
The White House quickly noted that the restrictions were focused on people, not boxes, and Trump later appeared to clarify his remarks in a tweet.
"The restriction stops people not goods, Trump posted

(8,200 posts)Not only is he totally unqualified for the position, he has surrounded himself with people of the same caliber. Those selected for vital positions of authority only criteria are unquestioning faithful boot lickers or brain dead relatives. This is what many feared was to be an inevitable catastrophe when a totally unqualified narcistic ignoramus is elected by the "common folks."
Those common folks whose only criteria for their vote is solely predicated on the candidate sharing their prejudices and not only their profound ignorance but actual rejection of any intellectual knowledge. People of limited education and knowledge pathetic attempt of to protect their shattered ego is to reject anything beyond their comprehension as, in the words of their master, a hoax. It is sad fact that many of our fellow citizens can be easily manipulated.
Those with minimal educations are taking the blunt of elimination of lower skilled jobs due to globalization, outsourcing and increased automation. They are prime subjects for exploitation by demagogues who are making unsubstantiated promises of return to times that are an impossibility. What is demanded is leaders that are truthful about the circumstances and are determined to provide viable solutions, not empty promises.

(5,721 posts)I work a flight to London every day. I worked it last night, and Trump's surprise "proclamation" came down a couple of hours before the baggage containers were to be picked up from the bagroom and loaded onto the plane. Customer service personnel came and pulled about a sixth of the bags out of the containers to be reclaimed; people were cancelling because they were afraid they might not be able to return.
It's gonna sting the airline, but they'll weather thirty days as they connect their other European traffic through London. It's going to really hurt other airlines, the smaller European carriers. And of course it's going to really hurt people, as they scramble to get out or get back in the next 48 hours. Oh, but cargo will be okay! This won't kick the shit out of anyone's economy or anything! /sarcasm

(22,100 posts)being severely impacted already w/ the CV, and perhaps some sort of restrictions from East Asia too, but the entire continent? I do know that they have things such as the Euro Rail (entire continent) but restricting an entire continent is going to stop realistically the CV?
And he's having to clarify his 'restrictions' already, not just on people and goods, and 'various other things' too? Again, trying to govern w/ a stupid, idiotic tweet. No wonder they don't write things like contracts via tweets. Maybe idiot could take a hint?
