Vauxhall and Airbus to 3D-print parts in wartime drive to make 20,000 ventilators in weeks
Last modified on Wed 18 Mar 2020 06.54 EDT
UK manufacturers such as Vauxhall and Airbus are planning to 3D-print parts for ventilators to treat coronavirus patients, as part of a wartime effort to build thousands of medical devices that will be overseen by a management consultancy.
More than 60 companies began responding on Tuesday to a request from Boris Johnson, made during a conference call on Monday evening, to help produce 20,000 ventilators in as little as two weeks.
The plan aims to harness the power of British industry to assemble machines, as well as lending high-level design and 3D-printing capabilities to help companies that already make ventilators to produce more.
Vauxhall has offered to help with 3D printing and putting together the crucial devices, working from technical drawings to be provided in the next few days by the public research and development body Innovate UK.
We are experts at assembly and efficient mass production; we know how to process and we know how to make it lean, said Helen Foord, head of government relations at Vauxhall, owned by the French automotive group PSA. Weve offered our services as an assembly plant and we have 3D-printing capability at Ellesmere Port [car factory] too...........................................................

Seems it only took a few days for the
NHS to get in gear. --and get some much needed ventilators for their citizens. Also, meanwhile, Trump told the Governors a few days ago their were on their own.
Meanwhile in the US, the Congress --the Repugs are still arguing about a House bill that was suppose to help workers. damn!

(30,613 posts)Johnson's Plan A was to let everybody get the virus all at once, kill off the weak and build herd immunity.

(13,821 posts)Give out plans on how to make ventilators and go to it. Places that make sheet metal devices (like ac units) can make the box. Companies that make electric motors can retool to make motors for ventilators. Tubing etc.... final place puts it all together. They don't have to be fancy. I remember years ago working with small Bird respirators on the floors.. Not fancy but it worked and it was simple..

(32,017 posts)Here in the US we should already have done the samenationalize the companies that make ventilators, re-tool parts of those companies making different machines, and then crank out as many ventilators as we can as quickly as we can.

(31,669 posts)Weve had more than enough warnings from other countries about lack of ventilators. Why isnt there an effort in the US to ramp up production? Seems like all we are good at is sticking our heads in the sand. Extremely frustrating!

(26,874 posts)I was told that it wasn't going to happen in Britain, my information was wrong, and it was all a pipe dream.
I guess some DUers can't stomach the fact that other countries can cope better than we are.

(31,669 posts)I suppose Dump and Co. wont do that if someone wont be making a profit. Money always comes ahead of people in the US.

for the country to develop herd immunity.
He's insane, MF45's twin from another mother.
I wonder if he's ever heard of mutation and resistance.

(1,242 posts)" General Motors is studying whether it can use its auto factories to support production of ventilators and other medical equipment to help combat the coronavirus pandemic sweeping across the nation.
CEO Mary Barra spoke with told the Trump administration Wednesday about the automakers decision to pause production, the company said in a statement. "
"She also indicated GM is working to help find solutions for the nation during this difficult time and has offered to help, and we are already studying how we can potentially support production of medical equipment like ventilators, according to the statement."
According to people familiar with Barras conversation, GM would not be re-tooling or changing the equipment it uses to build vehicles, but may have extra space in some factories that could be used to manufacture ventilators."
