Gov. Ron DeSantis Says Florida is Shutting Down For Spring Breakers: 'The Party is Over'

Source: Mediate

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) announced that he’s putting an end to spring break revelry in his state with the coronavirus pandemic growing in the country.

In an interview on Thursday with Fox & Friends, DeSantis was asked if state beaches will be closing in light of vacationers who are adamant about going out and partying in public despite the crisis.

“The message I think for spring breakers is the party is over in Florida,” DeSantis said. “You’re not going to be able to congregate on any beach in the state. Many of the hot spots that people like to go to, whether it’s Miami beach, Fort Lauderdale and Clearwater Beach are closed entirely for the time being…We would tell those folks maybe come back next year when things are better, but that is not what we’re looking for.”

DeSantis said he wouldn’t close down every beach, but stressed that they will be made to comply with the CDC’s virus prevention guidelines. He also said that the state has seen high levels of cancellations as tourists have abandoned their plans amid the ongoing situation.

There have been viral images/videos of Florida overrun with "potential carriers".

I know I have posted this elsewhere but so far, about 1/2 of the positive PA cases reported were "young people" (although many a bit older than "college-age" but not by much).

younger people believe they are immune from getting serious cases. Too ignorant and self-centered to realize that there is a ripple effect. When they spread infections so that hospitals get overwhelmed, there is no treatment available for non-covid health problems. When it spreads, communities have to go into lockdown, and businesses close, people lose jobs, and then risk losing homes, cars, etc., maybe their own parents and siblings. Not to mention the deaths. When health care workers get sick, the situation worsens.

Also, the CDC is reporting now that close to half of hospitalized cases, including ICU, are people between 20 and 40.

and the theme continues - at least half of the positives are that 20 - 40 age group. And the doctors are also emphasizing that this age group is not somehow "immune" and they noted that some have been significantly ill.

And they did express concern for the healthcare workers themselves, where the PA Task Force I testing station that is about to get up and running in the next day or so, will be prioritizing the healthcare personnel.

ETA - the stats they gave included the fact that 20 of the 44 positives in Philly were healthcare workers and I believe they said 6 of those were hospitalized and the others are quarantined and riding it out at home.

covid cases/spread? I am an Erie native who lives in western NY. No relatives left in Erie, but people travel between Erie and Buffalo often. Cases in the Buffalo area are up to 28 confirmed, probably many more not tested or known.

Cleveland and Buffalo. Lots of travel back and forth in that "tri state" area. Both Cleveland and Buffalo have several confirmed cases of community spread that are rising daily. Plus, Pittsburgh has a lot of cases, and that is a third, though less frequent avenue of travel in and out of Erie. I am certain that there must be unknown Erie cases.

The small towns and rural areas in the center of the state are probably the safest -- for now at least.

Same here in NY. Most cases in NYC, followed by Buffalo, Rochester, and a few rural areas. Rural areas wuth Native casinos are vulnerable due to outsiders drawn to them, but they are closed now.

Feel like I should move to a mountain cabin.

Some people here in SE PA who have vacation homes down at the shore in Jersey have fled there (much to those Jersey counties' chagrin) and the county elected officials have told them to "go home".

addresses restaurants, bars, and motels/hotels. Some shopping malls are closed; others are not. People have realtives across these areas, so some degree of travel might continue, though much less now. Question is, how much did unknown cases spread before the coalition and shutdowns? Here in NY, the reason for the shutdowns was the anger of Cuomo and local county leaders over flagrant violations of half capacity rule in public places and stupid people out in bars to celebrate thenweekend before St. Patrick's day. Even in Buffalo, the parade was cancelled only days before the holiday and some people put on a display of floats anyway.

So, by the time of shutdowns, a lot of close intermingling had already occurred.

The capacity for denial seems unlimited, while the ability to recognize potential vectors of transmission seem extremely limited.

and people running to other states to buy liquor and that seemed to be the last straw!

Philly was due to have its 250th St. Patrick's Day parade on Saturday Mar. 14 and they only cancelled that a few days before. The mayor shamed a Mall during his presser yesterday for staying open, and threatened to send the cops and Licenses & Inspections staff there to make sure they shut down (they did after they heard the threat from the presser).

Yes it is circulating all over.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's still all Russian Repug smoke & mirrors & hypocrisy and lie a second pronouncements just to appear in charge while actually doing jack shit. I am still hoping this will really happen. I'm 67 almost 68 and have allergies, so every spring I get post nasal drip, chest congestion, coughs & runny nose which often end up as upper respiratory infections within a month. This year it's hit earlier - but for the first time in my life we had no real winter here, so that makes sense. I do not have a fever or body aches, but I do have bad post nasal drip and my chest feels tight and I occasionally cough, though it is often productive. So anyway, my chiropractor cancelled my therapy appts. because I coughed last time I was there. This cough has been going on for about a week, but neither it nor the chest congestion are getting worse. I don't think I need to be tested now since I'm asymptomatic but if I get any worse or become symptomatic I need to be tested, my family has a huge predisposition on both sides for lung problems.

Assface needs to stop lying and promising us stuff that's not happening in anywhere near the timeframe he claims. He needs to actually lead or step out of the way, but he's so fucking us over right now in his effort to pretend to be in charge & make good decisions when he doesn't listen or care.

I live in Clearwater. Spring break here usually runs the middle two weeks of March. Most Florida schools and colleges this year ended spring break on March 23rd.

All the asshole did was tell them to start clearing the beaches on the dates that we usually started clearing the beaches.

They haven't even slowed down here. And when they shut down the bars and beach clubs after 5PM - all that happened was that the teenagers joined the lines at the stores competing for frozen pizza, alcohol, (and condoms) so that the young are mixed with thousands of retirees and Canadians.

We are dealing with Morons!
