California Gov. Gavin Newsom orders all Californians to stay at home
Source: San Diego Union
Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday ordered all Californians to stay at home, marking the first mandatory restrictions placed on the lives of all 40 million residents in the states fight against the novel coronavirus.
The governors order comes at a critical time in California, where 19 people died and another 958 have tested positive for the disease.
Officials hope telling people to remain in their homes and restrict social interactions will slow the spread of the virus and ultimately prevent hospitals from being overrun with sick patients. The request for all residents to quarantine at home marks the strongest escalation of the Newsom administration's response to the virus.
Newsom on Thursday also asked Congress for $1 billion in federal funds to support the states medical response to the novel coronavirus, which he said he expects will infect more than half of all Californians. The state projects that 25.5 million people in California will be infected with the coronavirus over an eight-week period.

How I wish we had you or someone like you in the White House at this critical time.
I hope that Governor Cuomo who has been fantastic with all of this finds it prudent to follow Newsoms lead...

(7,715 posts)We've been under lockdown in the Bay Area since Tuesday morning at 1201am Pacific. It's fine.
I've been to the grocery once, and I have a couple of online deliveries coming for us and some neighbors soon. We reached out to folks on our street and volunteered that we could buy stuff for them, and they were happy.
At least you showed leadership, unlike that fool who is occupying our White House.

(2,900 posts)...and in detailed form explain to the public that the shelter in place orders work.
Additionally that a shelter in place is not going to be razor wire at the intersections of your community. It will not be military humvees patrolling the streets with automatic weapons and searchlights.
You still have access to groceries, pharmacies, etc.
You just cant scratch that PinkBerry itch you get at 8:30 on a Wednesday evening.

Also, I wonder if those who work in supplying grocery stores still work? I'm in a dairy factory in Minnesota, and this question has been on my mind if this happens here.

(5,939 posts)The state's order, which does not have a set end date, includes exemptions for public safety and health care operations as well as other essential services, including laundromats, grocery stores, and restaurants that offer takeout or delivery. But even those essential businesses will need to incorporate social distancing practices keeping 6 feet of space between individual employees and customers, officials said.
Under state law, violations of the order are punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 or by imprisonment for no more than six months however, Newsom and local officials have stressed they do not plan to have police handling enforcement.

(5,721 posts)You're not locked inside, but businesses have to work within reason to eliminate close gatherings, etc.
I'm in San Mateo County and most restaurants have gone "take-out or delivery only," while a few have closed up for the duration of the order (some until May). Safeway, Walgreens, Wal-Mart, etc. have reduced hours--little weird, as this will concentrate customers within the shorter hours. Public transportation still runs.

(1,257 posts)We can go out for essentials - grocery store, pharmacy. Restaurants are take out only.Fortunately, pet stores are considered essential, because Jake is 15 years old and requires special food. Also hardware stores.
I haven't been in the car since Monday - we do go out for walks. We're going out tomorrow for Jake's food, and I am looking forward to getting take out (I'm thinking Thai). It will probably be surreal, the way it was when PG&E shut off the power.
When the Bay Area got shut down, it was initially declared for two weeks. It looks like it's going to be a lot longer.
One creepy thing - Jake had his annual physical a week ago, and everything was normal except he needs his teeth cleaned. That's normal, that dog has always needs a yearly teeth cleaning. When the vet called me back to give me his test results, I asked about the teeth cleaning, scheduled for next week. She said, "Well, the vet board is advising us to postpone any non-essential procedures in case we need to use them for humans." I told her that I guess I could stand stinky dog breath for a little longer.
I'm assuming she means masks and such in terms of needed equipment, but good grief, what's the world coming to?

The state secured 393 rooms across two hotels, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday night, to get people out of these encampments.
That number could rise in the coming days as his team works to find additional hotel beds for people sleeping outside.

If the country doesn't shut down will Newsom have to block all entries in and out of the state? Airports, roads, ports?
