During a press briefing to address the coronavirus pandemic this Friday, President Trump touted the drug hydroxychloroquine as “very effective” against the coronavirus, even after top NIH official Dr. Anthony Fauci warned that clinical research needed to be done before it’s distributed to the public.

“I think without saying too much, I’m probably more of a fan of that than — maybe than anybody, but I’m a big fan. We will see what happens. We all understand what the doctor said is 100% correct. It’s early, but I have seen things that are impressive,” he said.

As the briefing played out over the airwaves, folks on Twitter commented on what they saw as the president undermining Fauci in real time.......................................

His over-riding concern has always been public health, not politics. It's not his fault with regards to this crisis -- I think he's doing the best he can now -- it's just that my dad died of AIDS and I've read way too many books critical of the government response to the HIV epidemic that criticized him.

In a way, though, maybe his long-standing arguments with activists then have helped make him a better public health doctor in a crisis. He does know better than to tell sick scared people that they *can't* try an already-FDA-approved drug if their doctor wants them to -- even if all it does is act like a placebo for COVID-19 if taken at the correct doses. That what gets people breaking into your facility to protest.

But he does know that such attempts must be studied, even if on a "parallel track" to actual controlled research attempts -- you can gain some data from both investigational tracks. And so he's not promising it's a cure.

I do think he's the most sane person on the stage lately, and considering his name did not have good connotations in my mind before this, it's almost shocking he overcame my prior bias (which I know is mostly me).

Please don't let him get sick.
