U.S. intelligence reports from January and February warned about a likely pandemic

U.S. intelligence agencies were issuing ominous, classified warnings in January and February about the global danger posed by the coronavirus while President Trump and lawmakers played down the threat and failed to take action that might have slowed the spread of the pathogen, according to U.S. officials familiar with spy agency reporting.

The intelligence reports didn’t predict when the virus might land on U.S. shores or recommend particular steps that public health officials should take, issues outside the purview of the intelligence agencies. But they did track the spread of the virus in China, and later in other countries, and warned that Chinese officials appeared to be minimizing the severity of the outbreak.

Taken together, the reports and warnings painted an early picture of a virus that showed the characteristics of a globe-encircling pandemic that could require governments to take swift actions to contain it. But despite that constant flow of reporting, Trump continued publicly and privately to play down the threat the virus posed to Americans. Lawmakers, too, did not grapple with the virus in earnest until this month, as officials scrambled to keep citizens in their homes and hospitals braced for a surge in patients suffering from covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

Intelligence agencies “have been warning on this since January,” said a U.S. official who had access to intelligence reporting that was disseminated to members of Congress and their staffs as well as to officials in the Trump administration, and who, along with others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive information.

tRump is famous for not trusting his own intell agencies.

If the US covid response had been LIHOP, they would have made small efforts to seem to be doing something. Instead they did nothing except close flights to China. tRump blocked it all, for his numbers, because he is so stupid he truly thought it would go away.

There is much more stupidity in the universe than malice.

LIHOP may be part of 9/11, but not this.

But it's like leading indicators' predicting recession.

They've predicted 12 out of the last 9 recessions (and missed a couple).

I mean, a no-fail predictor of recession happened last summer. And the summer before. Believe every prediction and you'd become more neurotic a panphobe than a parody of the already parodic Felix Unger.

Predicting a problem is easy, and that's what intelligence is always paid to do. There's always a top-ranked threat, and there's always a growing threat. Sometimes we pay attention, sometimes the government pays attention, sometimes nobody cares.

Take a recent intelligence report concerning foreign interference in the US elections. We heard "Russia." The media heard "Russia". The report said China, Russia, and Iran. And that Russia wasn't the top offender.

Everybody has a filter and is confident that some problems won't happen or won't be a problem to handle. Trump's is often unreasonable, but since I have one it makes me rather hypocritical to get too bent out of shape. Outrage, like fear, warps understanding and memory.

I knew. I was a nurse and when I saw what China was doing, I knew it was bad.
Their economy was tanking yet they did what was right. Shut down the cities to reduce the spread. Build that hospital in 10 days. Yet trump cannot help get needed medical supplies to states.
If it is true about the US knowing in Jan( and they should if they had half decent intelligence) they Trump deliberately lied to the American people. For the sake of the ECONOMY. Which is tanking anyway.
I googled how many student come from China, because I live in a college town. Over 350,00 / year. They had already returned for the new semester. Not to mention all the flights in and out of China daily.

I am not blaming the Chinese for this.
I blame Trump for his pig headed stupidity, his incompetence and his unfitness to lead the US
Trumps response to this is nothing short of criminal
I wondering of deaths of Americans will be enough for Republicans to do something about Trump.
I fear it will be the economy for them. That is when they will have had enough.

As long as he and his family can continue gifting at the expense of the American taxpayers, nothing else matters, including taking preemptive action following intelligence briefings/warnings. Trump is a one-trick pony and his trick is grifting.

No different than 9 -11 ... imho..

Too much has been written about warnings from our "allies " weeks leading up to the attacks..No doubt closing the airports and warning the public was weighed..much like warnings about the coronavirus..against finance losses..

About a possible pandemic threat , but he chose to ignore it because he was lazy , and refused to do anything about it leaving us unprotected and unprepared because of his incompetence. Now he's trying to con people into believing he's doing a great job while he's dragging his feet and refusing to help. The reason its so bad now is from trump , and he made it much worse hurting our economy more than it should have by HIS actions, and shouldn't still be in office for this now. He should be hearing calls to resign now.
