De Blasio says April and May 'are going to be a lot worse'

Source: The Hill

New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio (D) said Sunday the coronavirus outbreak will get worse in the next two months, adding that he does not think President Trump is doing enough to mitigate the pandemic. “The truth is, and New Yorkers and all Americans deserve the blunt truth, it is only getting worse. And in fact, April and May are going to be a lot worse,” the mayor said.

The outbreak will get even worse, he said, due to Trump’s refusal to invoke the Defense Production Act for the medical equipment hospitals need. “The president of the United States is from New York City and he will not lift a finger to help his hometown,” de Blasio said, adding that New York City accounts for a third of the cases of COVID-19 across the country.

The mayor said he has repeatedly asked for the military to be mobilized to be “used to the fullest” to get equipment such as ventilators. The mayor said all medically trained military personnel should be sent to “places where the crisis is deep,” such as New York.

He added that if ventilators are being produced, they need to be sent to New York, not in months but in the next 10 days. “And the only force in America that could do that is the military," de Blasio said. "Why are they at their bases? Why are they not being allowed to serve? I guarantee you they're ready to serve. But the president has to give the order.”

Explain what " WORSE" means....what to expect...verses a speculative generalized statement, " it is only getting worse. And in fact, April and May are going to be a lot worse,” the mayor said. "

What conditions of worse? more deaths, isolation, no food, ...what?

When I worked for DoD, there were times when I made things sound much more dire than they actually were in order to get enough attention paid to what I needed to support my system. The maintainers I supported did the same to me. I suspect there's a lot of that going on.

right nowt he US is still increasing at 33% more PER DAY. Right now its about 32k - at the present rate it'll be 350k next sunday, reach 1 million in 12 days, and two weeks be at 1.75 million....

BUT it all depends on if the methods of isolation are working or not....

he wants the military to go seize the equipment from others and bring them to NYC. But certainly what he means is trained military personnel with their own ventilators.

And when it happens, it'll be his doing. Entirely.

He also wants to make sure that his constituency is first in line. Send all of them. Now.

If you were in charge of that stockpile, would you send it all just to NY? Or would you hold back some so when, say, Atlanta or Los Angeles or NOLA needed some of it there'd be equipment and supplies? And if it was all sent and you were in Atlanta or Los Angeles or NOLA and was told you'll be getting none of it, would it seem fair?

Or maybe you'll assume that there'll be enough produced by the time you needed to send the stuff elsewhere? It's a risk, isn't it?

Hard to say "no" to somebody in need, even if it means things might be worse later. And hard to make any argument given uncertainty. The one guarantee that they have is whatever they do there'll be a loud contingent of people still complaining.
