United States could become coronavirus epicenter: WHO
Source: Reuters
GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States has the potential to become the new epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic due to a "very large acceleration" in infections there, the World Health Organization said on Tuesday.
The highly contagious respiratory virus has infected more than 42,000 people in the United States, prompting more governors to join states ordering Americans to stay at home.
Over the past 24 hours, 85 percent of new cases worldwide were from Europe and the United States, WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris told reporters. Of those, 40 percent were from the United States.
Asked whether the United States could become the new epicenter, she said: "We are now seeing a very large acceleration in cases in the U.S. So it does have that potential. We cannot say that is the case yet but it does have that potential."
"...They (the United States) have a very large outbreak and an outbreak that is increasing in intensity," Harris added.

(9,313 posts)Statistics is not my thing, but it seems to me incidence relative to the population is needed for any meaningful comparison of "how bad" things are in a given country.
Graphs like this also leave open the question of degree of testing. Don't we also need number of tests per 10,000 (or some such). That might provide a little insight into accuracy/inaccuracy of detection rates over time. I assume the general trend for all countries graphed is an increased number of tests over time. Without some measure of that, I don't see how we tease out increase in detection vs. increase in actual number of cases.

USA is late, has low compliance, and not many citizens have access to SKorea quality care.

(9,313 posts)to it. Raw numbers in this case are just meaningless. Of course we have more cases than the UK or Germany, our population is a lot greater. It would be a really sad story if they had greater total numbers than we do.

(48,988 posts)It is about the time it takes to multiply from 100 cases to 1000 and 10,000.
"Days since 100th case".
If anything the measure should be more favourable to places like the US which have lower population density. But instead, the US is now the fastest riser because of a vacuum in the top office.

Chaos is what the sadistic, psychopath lives for. Pain makes him happy especially if he can inflict it en masse and watch the suffering, all the better.
He knows numbers. The prospect of inflicting pain on a grand scale excites him beyond our wildest dreams. He's just that demented.
I predict that he can hardly wait to see people dying in droves. Watching us suffering while he holds the keys to so many solutions yet refuses to use them, is what floats his psychopath boat.
He's not completely stupid and is enjoying being able to make us suffer. It's what a psychopath does.
