Democrats consider contingencies as coronavirus threatens to upend July convention

The decision to postpone this year's summer Olympics, announced Tuesday, put further pressure on convention planners. Democrats selected the mid-July date in an effort to pick a nominee before the international sporting event began. Now that the coronavirus outbreak has delayed the Olympics, some are questioning whether similar changes need to be made to the convention.

"We have never been here before. We are in uncharted territory and it is clear to me that it is appropriate at this time ... that they are looking at contingency options," said Antonio Villaraigosa, the former mayor of Los Angeles who was chair of the 2012 convention. "There is no decision yet to postpone or cancel the convention in anyway, but it would be malpractice not to look at contingencies."

Villaraigosa said that he doesn't believe the party is at the point where they have to decide whether to scrap its most important event. But the former mayor said Perez and other Democrats are "looking at a broad panoply of options that may include a virtual convention."

"I am not arguing that they go to a virtual convention," he added, "but it would be malpractice not to look at all of the options."

also could there be some conflicts with the NBA finals? with the Olympics postponed, is there really any reason why it can't be moved to August?

The NBA finals will draw far, far more viewers than people watching the conventions. former9thward Mar 2020 #3

The Democratic convention, if, or whenever, or wherever, or however it's conducted, is less concerning. The outcome is certain at this point.

Let's have a few more primaries, mail-in, phone-in, or conducted by poll of lawn signs, and the delegate count will be done.

But the NBA finals, oh dear! And baseball spring training and opening days delayed, oh the humanity!

I have to admit denying certain folks a platform to disrupt by simply not having the event is a delicious thought in these troubled times.

Like the virus will still have us by the throat for the Nov. election, much less the Dem convention. We also need to be thinking about contingencies for that.

I wouldn't put anything past trump at this point, including trying to postpone/cancel the election.

The Texas and California delegations will be housed near O'Hare airport and will have a long bus rides each way. Being cooped up in a bus is not a good idea right now
