Florida Gov. DeSantis defends refusal to close beaches, points to NYC subway

Source: Associated Press

NEW YORK — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Saturday that he doesn’t regret leaving the beaches open for spring break even as the coronavirus outbreak spreads through the state.

Instead, the Republican governor compared people in Florida in the “sunshine, heat and humidity” to New York and the subways where people are “packed like sardines.”

“Do you hear the same people complaining about the New York City subway system being open?” he said at a press conference. “I mean, give me a break. Which one is more conducive to having COVID-19 spread or any respiratory virus? It’s not even close.”

DeSantis has been criticized for his slow response to the pandemic, leaving most of the lockdown decisions up to individual cities.

When the three sources pressuring @RonDeSantisFL to keep FL open and doing business -- despite the risks -- are revealed, shit is going to get real.

(The main one is Trump, but you knew that.)

DeSantis is keeping the beaches open to support the tourism industry.

Just a small difference there.
One is a necessity, the other is just for greed.

and wasn't during spring break. The NY lockdown started 3/20.

Texas has/doesn't have a lockdown. The large metropolitan areas typically do, with surrounding 'burbs. Rural areas don't.

The area with the #1 death toll so far in Tx does have a lockdown. #2-4 do, too, but #1 is reasonably far ahead. That could change quickly, the numbers are still all fairly small, and I don't trust reported cases, too test-availability dependent.
