More than 700 employees at one Detroit hospital system test positive for coronavirus

Source: The Hill

Hundreds of staff at a Detroit-area hospital system have tested positive for coronavirus, the hospital's chief clinical officer said Monday evening.

Nonprofit news site BridgeMI.com reported that Dr. Adnan Munkarah of the Henry Ford Hospital Campus confirmed 731 cases of the coronavirus among employees at the hospital, accounting for 2 percent of the hospital system's 31,600 employees.

As many as 1,500 at another hospital system in the state have reported symptoms similar to coronavirus, though those numbers are not confirmed cases.

“Our team members are our greatest asset and their health and safety is a top priority as we continue to respond to this pandemic,” Munkarah said in a separate statement Monday evening confirmed the total number of positive test results.

The hospital system's chief operating officer added in a statement to BridgeMI.com that staff were working "24/7" to acquire more personal protective equipment (PPE) for nurses and doctors including masks, which hospitals across the country have reported trouble obtaining.

731 at one hospital. But only 2% of the SYSTEM’S 31,600 employees. A more reasonable number would be what percentage of the employees at that hospital is 731 individuals. Trying to make it sound not so bad. But in actuality, that number of cases at one facility is alarming and speaks to the fact that health care workers are NOT adequately protected.

Both the 731 individuals and the 31,600 employees are based on the same scope. The Henry Ford hospital system is a series of medical facilities, not just one hospital.

I mean is it far more easier to catch this than either of those, the same or less of a chance?

Yes, it is clear this is far more deadly than flu, and infinitely more deadly than a cold (I don't think anyone ever dies of a cold, after all) but even without the difference in deadliness, the infection rate is important to know.

We keep on being told that a very large majority of those infected, perhaps as many as 80%, show few or no symptoms. If that is true, then this virus isn't really all that awful. It's bad mainly in that it's a novel virus, meaning we've never experienced it before and so no one has an immunity, but if only 20% of those infected show symptoms, and a minority of those are sick enough to go into hospital, and a further minority die. . . .

The reason the number of fatalities is as high as it is is that there are a fuck of a lot of people out there available to be infected.

Shall we discuss overpopulation? Shall we consider the fact that the planet is well beyond its carrying capacity and that if the population doesn't drop by a truly significant amount, none of us are safe.
