Ginsburg Blasts Conservative Justices Who Blocked Wisconsin's Absentee Voting Extension

Either they will have to brave the polls, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote in her dissent, or they will lose their right to vote.
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg excoriated her conservative colleagues over their decision to deny Wisconsin Democrats request to extend the deadline for absentee voting in the states election on Tuesday, despite concerns over the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
In a 5-4 vote on Monday, the Supreme Courts conservative bloc refused to extend the absentee voting deadline by six days, saying instead all mail-in ballots must be postmarked by Tuesday and received by April 13. Democrats had pleaded with the courts to give more leeway to voters as COVID-19 wreaks havoc around the nation, infecting more than 366,000 people and killing more than 10,000. The nations top public health officials have urged Americans to practice social distancing and to remain at home as much as possible, directives that run counter to entering a crowded polling place.
Ginsburg, who was joined in her dissent by the three other liberal Justices, said her conservative colleagues decision to see the election proceed as planned would effectively strip many Wisconsinites of their right to vote through no fault of their own.
The question here is whether tens of thousands of Wisconsin citizens can vote safely in the midst of a pandemic, Ginsburg wrote on Monday. With the majoritys stay in place, that will not be possible. Either they will have to brave the polls, endangering their own and others safety. Or they will lose their right to vote, through no fault of their own.
She continued: That is a matter of utmost importance to the constitutional rights of Wisconsins citizens, the integrity of the States election process, and in this most extraordinary time, the health of the Nation.........................................

I know several folks who thought the primary would be delayed and never asked for an absentee ballot.--they didn't believe that Republicans in the legislature would actually make them go out during our lock down.
Others did not know how to upload their ID via the computer to request the ballot.
WI is a mess!

(8,200 posts)The Supreme Court has become as corrupt as courts in the worst dictatorships in regard to the objective rule of law. The Republican controlled court didn't hesitate to put Bush in the White House so to expect them to actually be independent and to justly rule is an absurdity. Each and every decision, however how remotely, that does not conform with the Republicans' agenda is destined to be defeated.
The objective and intent of the making the justices appointment for life was to insure their independence from political pressure has been an unmitigated failure when Republicans control the nominating and appointment process. They are so driven by the a diabolical rightwing extremism of an intolerant minority that its rulings totally contradict the general consensus of the people. It has become a classical case of the very antitheses of its original purpose of its impartial adherence to the very Constitution they have sworn to uphold.

(12,503 posts)I would be on TV this morning telling the state how I'm going to move the team out of Wisconsin.
Does anyone have any testicles in Wisconsin? How about we hear from the Packers star players (or somebody for chrissakes) objecting vociferously about his BS making their state look like something out of the turn of the 19th century.
The courts would rather pose a death sentence on some voters rather than delay the vote or have a mail in. Buttheads.

(35,300 posts)This decision didn't involve election postponement. That was decided by the WI supreme court, which basically said that the legislature had been asked and decided not to postpone the election, expressing the legislature's will.
The SCOTUS decision involved absentee ballots and nothing more, if I remember correctly. By the time SCOTUS issued its ruling the WI court had said the elections would proceed. Since the elections were going to be held, then it was a question as to whether there was time to request and return an absentee ballot.

(6,181 posts).... it is a go for broke, hail mary attempt to hold on to control of the levers of government that they have already stolen.
Of course, they don't want a fair election where everyone gets a chance to select their leaders. Instead, the republicans want to reverse the process and choose who gets to vote in this election and all future elections.
Wisconsin has been corrupted by the gang of anti-government pro-one-party dictatorship.
This used to be a great state until Walker and his thugs stole power. One step at a time they have dismantled any fairness and equality that used to be a hallmark of the state and the people of Wisconsin.
I hope with the 2020 election we can start to slowly return the power of governance back to the people of Wisconsin.
