Antibody tests that would verify whether a person recently had the novel coronavirus could be available within a week, according to the nation's top infectious disease expert.
"Within a period of a week or so, we're going to have a rather large number of tests that are available," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on CNN's "New Day" Friday morning.
Having antibodies to the coronavirus could mean someone is protected from getting re-infected, making such tests important for medical workers and others on the front lines fighting the pandemic. "If their antibody test is positive, one can formulate strategies about whether or not they would be at risk or vulnerable to getting re-infected," Fauci explained.
"But as we look forward, as we get to the point of at least considering opening up the country as it were, it's very important to appreciate and to understand how much that virus has penetrated this society," Fauci said. "Because it's very likely that there are a large number of people out there that have been infected, have been asymptomatic and did not know they were infected."...

..At least 16,700 people have died of coronavirus in the United States -- nearly half of them in New York state. According to data from Johns Hopkins University, of the more than 466,390 total confirmed cases nationwide, about 162,000 are in New York state. That means it has more reported cases than any country in the world.

(17,876 posts)That's kind of relative. Even 1 million would only be a good start.

But If it does I doubt it will be easy to find and then get. This whole fiasco is infuriating. Why dont they just stfu. Itll be less stressful for everybody.

(9,637 posts)I may have had the coronavirus at the beginning of March. Would love to know if I had it. But I'm sure that getting ahold of one of these tests will be just like trying to get ahold of one of the coronavirus tests. Impossible. Unless you are famous, wealthy or a member of the GOP.

(9,637 posts)Very long ago I worked for a lovely man who had a little boy. And that little boy could not pronounce my name. What came out was 'Nay.' Everyone at that business forgot my real name and I was forever more known as Nay. To this day, some 40 years later, if I talk to anybody from that time period, I am called Nay. LOL!
So I certainly love your screen name!
I was sick for two weeks. Had a temperature for 10 days. I have never in my life had a temperature for longer than about three days. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could find out if we are now immune? I've said it before, and I'll say it again, we could be the worker bees! If we are immune, we can safely go out and help others.

Yes, I'd love to know if I was immune. I'd start donating plasma, and I wouldn't be so worried about going to the grocery, LOL.

(268 posts)I think the concept of the test is great. Everyone wants to know if they have already had it.
But has any medical expert yet said that it cannot be contracted again?
Edit1: I would also like to know if people are carriers after recovery.

(23,138 posts)Most science/medicine folks assume permanent immunity is possible and that after youre immune you dont carry. Then again, read the history of Typhoid Mary!
